Abergavenny Bowls Club began the week with a Ladies Friendly against Beaufort Ladies at Avenue Road. Beaufort Ladies were successful on two rinks but Abergavenny Ladies managed to secure the overall aggregate victory by 53 shots to 41. The closest game was on the rink was on the rink of Mary Vale as scores were level playing the final end. The Beaufort rink managed to score one shot to secure victory by 14 shots to 13. The rink of Mary Evans had a comfortable victory but Diane Bevan’s rink lost by fourteen shots.
The Ladies game was followed by a five rink Mixed Friendly game against Caldicot. In glorious weather Caldicot Managed to forge ahead over the final few ends to win the game by 84 shots to 73. The Abergavenny rink of John Vale took the lead from the start and then increased their advantage to win by 24 shots to 10. The other victorious rink for Abergavenny was that of Martin Doughty. They outscored their opponents in the final quarter of the game to win by19 shots to 16. The rinks of Gethin Hill, Mike Collins and John Whomersley all suffered defeats by a similar margin losing by 20-10, 18-10 and 20-10 respectively.
Last Saturday Cwmbran Park were the visitors to Avenue Road for an MBA game. On a green in good condition despite the rain during the previous twelve hours Abergavenny, with every member of the team contributing to their rink performance, won on all four rinks to register a victory by 100 shots to 65.
The most remarkable of these victories was achieved by the rink of John Beaton. After fourteen ends they were seventeen shots down. In a total turnaround over the final seven ends they scored nineteen shots, and prevented the Cwmbran rink from scoring any, to win by 23 shots to 21. After a fairly close game over the first fourteen ends Jack Vale’s rink managed to outscore their opponents over the final seven ends to win by 21 shots to 17.
Gethin Hill’s rink also took control in the final third of their game, scoring twelve shots and conceding only four to win by 23 shots to 14. The rink of Matthew Vale was in total control for the second half of their game, outscoring the Cwmbran rink by seventeen shots, which enabled them to secure victory by 31 shots to 13.
The final game of the week was a rearranged GBL game at Whiteheads. Unfortunately, Abergavenny could win on only one of the three rinks and consequently lost the game by 56 shots to 42. Abergavenny’s successful rink was that of Mike Collins. They built a nine shot lead and then resisted a fightback by their opponents to win by 16 shots to 13. Steve File’s rink was leading for the first half of the game but they then conceded thirteen shots in the second half to lose by 23 shots to 12. Ron Smith’s rink trailed their opponents from the start and could never get into contention, which eventually led to defeat by 20 shots to 14.
This week Abergavenny Mixed team will play St Martins in Hereford on Thursday. This is followed on Saturday by the final MBA game of the season at Avenue Road against Brynmawr. On Bank Holiday Tuesday the 31st August Abergavenny will welcome Uffculme, who are based in Devon, for a five rink friendly fixture, being played as part of their annual tour.
