£10 short of three grand.
That’s the amount of the jackpot in our weekly tote lottery. Tickets are £1 and are on sale at the snack bar and behind the bar in the clubhouse. The draw is every Tuesday night and the winners are notified by telephone.
Abergavenny Town Women
Abergavenny Women are now firmly under the banner of Abergavenny Town Football Club and to reflect this they now incorporate ‘Town’ into their title. Coaches are Laura Davies and Ceri Hudson with Will Cheshire as secretary. I must give outgoing manager, Richie Jeremiah huge praise for the magnificent job he did in making the Women such a competitive force in top flight women’s football and really putting the town of Abergavenny on the map.
As chairman I issued the following statement to greet them.
“Ever since I first saw them play I was tremendously impressed by Abergavenny Town Women, so it is with great delight that I welcome them as an integral part of Abergavenny Town Football Club. I am sure that by working together in partnership, Abergavenny Town Women will enhance their growing reputation, and will become even more successful in the future”
FAW Fair Play Day
This is set for Saturday 17 August, but we will not be able to participate then as we have no fixture on this date. I have asked the FAW and they have agreed that we can stage this at our next home fixture which is coming up very soon, next Tuesday night in fact, in our local derby with Monmouth Town. Please note kick off is 6.30pm, and full details of what the FAW Fair Play Day is all about will be in Tuesday nights programme.
Abergavenny Town Juniors
Last season we very successfully ran an u18 side in the South Wales Youth League and finished in a very creditable fourth place in the league.
A very grateful thanks to both Pete Simmons and Huw Bowden for managing the side and putting up with all the extensive travelling involved. Both have now moved on and although we were very likely to be admitted to the more convenient, Gwent County Youth League, it is disappointing to report that we were unable to find a manager, so no u18 side this year.
This means the spotlight falls on our u16 side, managed by Steve Hollingsworth, who will be playing all their home matches at Penypound Stadium.
During the close season we looked again at the Welsh League Reserve Division. We noted the amount of travelling involved to places like Dinas Powys for example, and the fact the league- which is without any promotion or relegation- lacks competitiveness, and is without any cup competitions.
We have therefore withdrawn from the Reserve Division and have entered the reserves into the Gwent Central League.
We have done this for several reasons, firstly to cut down on the amount of travelling involved, with nearby Pontypool being the furthest flung place we visit. To provide a more competitive edge with many local derbies and after witnessing the vibrant cup finals the GCFL held at Penypound last season, the opportunity to win some silverware via the Langdon and Open Cup.
We are very grateful to Eileen Perry, Huw Burkitt and Malcolm Ewers of the Gwent Central League for all the help they gave in admitting us, and we are also very grateful that their rules allow us to enter into Division 1, rather than Division 2.
But most gratitude must go to Mark Heffernan who has stepped up to manage the side. Chairman Rob Francis commented “I have no doubt we are going to have a very exciting season in the Gwent Central League, and with Mark at the helm we could have no better person”.
The season starts on Wednesday 28 August away at Blaenavon Blues (6pm)
