Light at the end of the tunnel!

We are mindful the we have not been able to communicate with you in recent weeks and that we have not be open for business on either the rugby or social front in some time. Therefore, it is time to communicate some of the things that your committee have been working on behind the scenes and hopefully provide you with some much needed optimism that things will return to normal.

Each of the subcommittees have been working hard and here are some of the highlights in each area:

1. Compliance

Due to changes in circumstance or evolving family and work commitments we have had a few volunteers step down from their roles within the club. The committee would like to thank Chris Tosh for his efforts in recent years and welcome Roly Dixon as his replacement in the Rugby Safe coordinator role. The committee would also like to welcome Lee Dodds into a role that has not previously been filled and hope that his professional expertise will help us grow in the area of Health and Safety. A further role, for which we require a replacement, is that of Safeguarding Officer. Malcolm Nicholson who brought his experience from the Education sector to the role will step down in June. Again the Committee thanks Malcolm for his efforts and professionalism. If any of you would like to volunteer in this important role please contact Darren Springhall, d.springhall@ntlworld.com or 07867 644914 (SMS or WhatsApp).

We currently have a subcommittee reviewing the club constitution in order to keep us compliant with current legislation and ensure that it is reflective of our club identity. Further news in the coming weeks and months on this important activity.

Consideration is already being given to possible dates for a face to face AGM and the postponed players’ dinner for the 2019-20 season. It is early days but the feeling is that these two events may be possible in July or August; Government restrictions allowing.

2. Rugby

After what seems like an eternity, the focus of the committee is finally shifting back to playing rugby and enjoyment of the sport that we all love. Whilst we await detailed guidelines from the RFU the intent is to get straight back to playing for all teams with intra-club activity over the Easter weekend. Please look out for updates via the website and social media platforms for news and developments on this subject. I think I speak for all when I say that we want as many players as possible involved from the start.

The previously postponed CPD for Kids First Contact has provisionally been rearranged. The new dates are Tuesday 4th May and Tuesday 18th May, both 6:30pm - 9:00pm at Acklam. If there is interest in the course please post your interest on the club coaches group.

3. Recruit & Engage

James Nicholson, who is our U15 captain, is currently helping the club with its Instagram presence. This is part of his Duke of Edinburgh award but shows real commitment to the club. Well done James! If anyone has content that might be interesting for our members and wider community on the club social media platforms, please make contact with Mark Collins, acklamrufc@gmail.com, 07519 733539 (SMS or WhatsApp).

4. Club: People & Facilities

We are still unable to open up the club for social use and events. However, this subcommittee is actively looking at options for each stage of the Government road map out of restrictions with a number of options already under consideration. Whilst we are desperate to open up again this must be on the premise that we are able to keep our members and staff safe and also that it makes sense financially.

The club continues to forge a new relationship with the Nicholas Postgate Trust who run, amongst others, the two Schools that are our closest neighbours. Club representatives will meet with them again on 24th March, via zoom. This relationship has the potential to deliver some joint facility development opportunities and in the longer term access to a pool of age grade players.

The committee are in the process of developing an option to construct some own body-weight exercise stations in the training area close to pitch 4. There has already been some discussion with coaches and players with regard to need and design.

5. Finance & Business

Despite the enforced closure of the club facilities during the pandemic we are in a stable poisiton financially and able to invest in r
