Strong batting performance but ACC could not get the last 2 wickets for a win

Match Report by Pete Murphy

Winning the toss, Jon chose to bat first.

The batting was opened by Steve and Rikky, we got off to a bumpy start as Steve was bowled out early on. Followed not long after by Rikky who was given out as LBW. Frustratingly Hasnain and Pete, at 3 and 4, were both caught out after each getting 3 runs. Fortunately, Jon came in next, who along with Brandon, protected their wickets and kept the scoreboard ticking against two very consistent bowlers.

A few overs later, Brandon edged the ball to one of the TMW slips. In at 7 was Jack Stone who swiftly smashed the ball for 4 between mid-off and cover. The ball was not found. Jon and Jack together put on over 60 runs, with a fantastic show of defensive and attacking shots. This was much needed as when they came together we were 5 wickets down for less than 50 runs.

Good batting and a few cheeky byes, courtesy of the Mid-Whits wicket keeper and fine leg, put us right back in the game now as they pushed the score to over 100. Jack was bowled out on 23 runs and Jon followed the next over on 40. Vivek came in next and then Vinay at number 9.

Vinay displayed perfect approach to lower-order batting, keeping his wicket, and scoring off the bad balls. Aaron unfortunately was caught out for a duck but Aaryan came on at number 11 and played a lovely lofted drive over the mid-off for 4. He was caught out on 16 runs ending the innings. Vinay finished on 27 not out. Overall, the batting was great considering the rough start, thanks to excellent performances from Jon, Jack and Vinay. In total we reached 184 runs in 43.1 overs.

The bowling was opened by Aaryan, who unfortunately didn’t claim any wickets. However, had a good economy over 7 overs and a maiden over. Jack opened from the other end bowling out both opening batsmen during his first spell. The first change of bowlers brought on Vivek and Rikky who continued to keep the run rate lower than required to reach our score. Aaron took a good catch off Vivek’s bowling and generally had a stand out fielding performance in the covers.

Surprisingly, Jon came on to bowl and shocked the TMW with his off spin. Taking 3 great wickets that really lifted the team’s spirits late on in the game. It was looking up for Addiscombe as the overs drew in, with a final wicket from Vinay from a cracking catch by Brandon. We only needed 2 wickets for the win, but they held out, ending on 162 in 48 overs.

We therefore only got a winning draw after a long hard game. Still, it had been a good team batting performance and resilient bowling from the from the Fortress fours.
