The Young Rams secured their first point of the season in an entertaining draw at Mayfield Stadium against Leatherhead Under18s.

It has been a difficult season for the fledgling team and a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes and that paid off as the two teams shared 6 goals under the lights. Acting Manager Dan Woollard made several changes to the team that lost heavily last week and they more than held their own in the first half.

Third placed Leatherhead u18s took some time to get into the game and for the first period it was the Young Rams who did the pressing. Glen Pitman went close on 10 minutes with an overhead kick that went into the side netting and Thomas Kearley headed just wide a few minutes later. Kearley had another chance on 22 minutes when the ball was lifted over the Tanners’ defence but the goalkeeper Kornel Ziobrowski pulled off a good save, his first of many during the game.

It was in the 29th minute that Leatherhead had their best chance with a tantalising cross but it was just too far in front of their onrushing forwards. Despite Levi Knight and Pitman making Ziobrowski work again it was the Tanners that took the lead sliding the shot under Jacques Michell to give them a lead going into half-time.

It was early in the second half that they doubled their lead. Some good work on the right hand side saw a low cross that was turned into their own net. After all the hard work it looked like the Rams would again fall short but they were far from over.

On the hour the Young Rams were back in it. A cross from the right was headed in at the far post by leading scorer Levi Knight. Within a couple of minutes Charles Anon nearly levelled only for a good save again by Ziobrowski. But as they pushed forward to get back on level terms they left spaces at the back and with 15 minutes to go they got in behind the defence and finished well to restore the two goal lead.

A lifeline was grabbed on 80 minutes as Eoin Fraser finished from 2 yards after a goal mouth scramble. Then on 84 minutes Glen Pitman raced onto the ball on the right hand side of the box and finished powerfully into the roof of the net giving the goalkeeper no chance.

The referee managed to find a full 7 minutes of added as Leatherhead tried to restore their lead. They appealed for a penalty after Jacques Michell went in to clear the ball but to no avail. Then with the moments to go a powerful shot from outside the area appeared to headed into the top corner only for Michell (pictured) to push it around the post.

The referee finally brought proceedings to a close and the points were shared. There is hope that they can now build on this result ahead of the final three games of the season all of which are at Mayfield Stadium.
