Hundreds of youngsters playing for around 100 teams – from age group under-sevens up to under-13s – descended on Wicor Recreation Ground for a day of football, which was largely blessed with sunshine and the occasional passing shower.
From The OnSite Group Stadium to almost the banks of the harbour, the grass area of the Rec was packed with youngsters enjoying their football and battling it out to try and net themselves a trophy. And the children were backed by hundreds more supporters, with family and friends out in force to cheer them on.
Home club AFC Portchester secured a hat-trick of successes to ensure it was a super Saturday for the Royals.
In the under-13s Group 1 section, AFC Portchester Royals were the winners and AFC Portchester Knights Orange were the runners-up. AFC Portchester Vikings under-12s were runners-up in their section of the tournament.
There were plenty of stalls on hand too to keep everyone refreshed and entertained – from the barbecue and sweets stall to a bouncy castle and the chance to buy photographs of the tournament action.
Trevor Deacon, chairman and chief finance officer of main club sponsors The OnSite Group, was in attendance to present the trophies during the first day of one of the south’s biggest and best youth football tournaments.
