AFC Varndeanians 4-3 Littlehampton
By Dave Bridges
Well earned 3 points
The V's were good for their 4-3 victory, over an ever improving Littlehampton side, but should have had the result wrapped up far earlier after numerous chances went close, save for the woodwork and some good saves from the Marigolds keeper.
Joe Keehan opened up the scoring after forcing his way into the box and Arnie scored a long range effort which he drilled into the bottom corner. We had other chances as we dominated the game, with Pearlo hitting the bar, Joe heading wide and a lovely goal from Chad which was inexplicably ruled offside when he had timed his run perfectly.
At 2-0 we were looking for the third but conceded a goal from a freekick by Mitchell Hand which looked to have taken a deflection and then predictably ex V Jack Langford tucked away an equaliser just before half time to go in at 2-2 which given the balance of play was somewhat unjust appearance but you have to take your chances and credit to Littlehampton for coming back into the match.
Kev's team talk was to keep playing the same way as it was proving dividends and he was convinced would see us score another couple of goals, it was just a matter of tightening up at the back. The players came out determined in the second half and it was much the same story, as we created a handful of chances hitting the woodwork a couple of times. Our pressure became to much for the Littlehampton defence as Ollie Blackman scored twice with well taken headers. The keeper made a couple of good saves from free kicks but still Littlehampton wouldn't cave in and scored a 3rd goal late on by George Gaskin to make the last 5 minutes uneasy but the V's held on and ran out deserved winners.
