Hillfoots won the second local derby of the season in front of a packed Earlsfield touchline and deservedly retained the McGill Trophy.
Overhead conditions were perfect on a chilly afternoon, however the previous week's heavy rains meant that the underfoot conditions were heavy and not really conducive to expansive rugby.
Hillfoots adapted quickly with an effective kicking game, forcing Alloa into errors then bringing their strong set-piece into action. Indeed it was from a scrum close to the Alloa line that the only score of the first half was registered - Greig Anderson driving from close-in.
Half time Alloa 0 Hillfoots 5
The Alloa back division had shown some signs of being able to open up the ‘Foots defence in that first half with only the final crucial ball not going to hand. However they hit gold with a lovely delayed pass by Colin Jess which found Kris Aitken on a perfect running angle and the Alloa Centre sliced through under the posts. Lee Cairney converted to give his side a narrow advantage.
The home support were hoping their side might now kick on, however it was Hillfoots who bounced back and applied pressure on the home line. They passed up a number of kickable penalties in a quest for a second try and looked to have been frustrated by a stubborn home defence. However a clearance kick failed to find touch and Hillfoots swept a counter-attack across the field where Alex Robertson finished wide on the left.
It was still only a three point game with the next score being crucial when the visitors launched a series of attacks on the Alloa line. Their pack were repelled on a number of occasions before Centre, Kevin Aitken came strongly onto a short pass and forced his way over. The only remaining question was whether Hillfoots could secure a bonus point with a fourth try and it came from Scrum-Half Jon McMurdo with the final play of the match.
Alloa Rugby Club would like to thank their joint match sponsors of Marshall Construction Alloa and BGL Contracts Glasgow for their generous backing of the fixture.
This week Alloa make the short trip to Dunfermline - 2pm kick off.
