Alloa return to winning ways in 12 try victory

Alloa bounced back from the previous week's disappointment at Kinross with a twelve try victory over Kirkcaldy twos.
Alloa had club skipper, Dale Foster, restored to the front row for this fixture and Jordan Graham added to the pack. Rab Truesdale returned to provide experience to the back division, which also saw Rab McCran back in the starting XV and Neil Burnside given a start on the wing.
The opening quarter was dominated by the outstanding Matty Pope who scored the opening two tries and then became provider for the next two scores that brought about the bonus point. Pope scored his first try from a flat ball from Kris Aitken and then outpaced the Kirkcaldy defence after hacking through a loose ball. The Alloa flanker was breaking the Kirkcaldy defensive line at will and sent over Scott McLennan and then found Kris Aitken on the over-lap. Aitken's pass went to ground but Robbie Warnock scooped the ball up and scampered home. At this point Pope departed with a hamstring tweak but the Alloa tries continued to flow. Scott McLennan scored a second and was followed over the try line by Gary Taylor before Kirkcaldy gave themselves a glimmer of hope with a converted try. However, Rab Truesdale had the final word on the half, dragging multiple would be Kirkcaldy tacklers over the line in scoring in the right corner.
Martin McKenzie added two conversions to make the half time score 39-7.
Alloa were briefly inconvenienced with more niggly injuries but were soon back in the try scoring groove. Jordan Graham did the spadework to provide Neil Burnside with a debut try, Gary Taylor cut through for a second try and then Martin McKenzie broke for an opportunist try from deep within his own half. Rab Truesdale was key to much of Alloa's attacking threat at this point and provided an inch perfect cross-field kick for Dale Foster to gather and score between the sticks.
To their credit Kirkcaldy refused to give up the fight and scored two late consolation tries. However the last word lay with Alloa when Blaine Gilchrist forced his way over from close in. Martin McKenzie and Rab McCran added the extras on a very satisfying afternoon at Earlsfield.
Match sponsor, Fraser Donaldson of F.Donaldson Bricklaying Services, handed over the man of the match award to double try scorer Scott McLennan.
Alloa's next league match will be away to Dundee university Medics this Saturday - kick-off 3pm.
