The AKRFC U12s hosted Aldwinians RFC from East Manchester on Sunday morning. Despite having an extra hour in bed, they only managed to bring nine players - a fact that was quickly resolved by Kersal loaning them a couple.
The first half started well with a scrum won against the head by hooker, Lonan Kearney, which resulted in a try by Tom Pattison. This was quickly followed up with a score by Fin Waterhouse who ran the full length of the pitch having caught the ball at the restart. Some poor tackling by Kersal saw the honours being levelled to 2-2 before the Aldwinians’ fly-half collected a neat chip over the Kersal defence line and ran in a try to make it 2-3. Again the scores were levelled with a surging run by Sam Ridgeway before some more missed tackles saw Aldwinians poke their nose ahead again to make it 3-4. A superb try saving tackle by Caine Lehwald kept Kersal in the game which was followed by two more Kersal scores to see the home side go in to half-time 5 tries to 4.
The second half saw extended periods of dominance by Kersal with some excellent running, rucking and passing but unfortunately with little reward. Things worsened during a ten minute period of missed tackles, poor passages of play and a lack of cohesiveness that resulted in the score being 5-9 in favour of the visitors. However, all was not lost with Sam Mason putting in a number of exciting side-steps to confuse the opposition, and the forwards of Connor Hill, Isaac Povey, Elliot Cardy realising the effectiveness of direct running at pace. The final play of the match saw a rampant Connor bulldozing himself over the Aldwinians’ try line with support from most of his team mates: final score 6-9.
