Ards 3rds aka ‘The Black Knights’ hosted Dromore 3rds in the quarter final of the McCambley Cup last Saturday.
Some great work by 3rds captain Davy Thompson, club stalwart Teddy Sloan and 1st XV coach John West with their pitch forks allowed the game to proceed.
The first half saw Ards play into the strong wind coming off Scrabo. A monumental effort by the Ards team ensued with the team retaining the ball for a large majority of the first half and only failing to score due to some interesting officiating.
Half time 0-0.
The physical battle recommenced in the second half with Dromore having the advantage of the wind dying in the second half.
Despite this the Ards team maintained their dominance scoring twice. First, through flanker Graeme Taylor who powered over the line with support from his fellow forwards and secondly by full back Mark Banford who added both conversions. Ards 3rds 14 v Dromore 0
There were too many superb performances by the Ards team to single anyone out in particular. It was a magnificent physical encounter that harked back to games of years past and despite the pain, the bruises, the aches and people wondering whether they’d been 7 rounds with Tyson Fury on Saturday being able to play rugby with your mates, put the effort in for each other and secure the win all made it worthwhile.
Ards now travel to Lurgan 2nds for the semi-final on Sat 7th March
