Ards U16 v Civil Service
The first league game of the season the newly formed u16 team lost to Civil Service by 67pts to 21.The first time the majority of the team met were in the changing rooms that morning compared to the more experienced Civil Service team who had competed last year in the u14 league.
The Ards team showed what raw talent they have but sadly it was individual efforts with small signs of team play which led to thier heavy defeat. Etahn Davis newly joined this year starting at No. 8 showed his strength in the rucjks and tackling whilst Ryan Boyd making his first start in the scrum half postion showed his strength and speed scoring two long range tries and winning a penalty try on another long run.
Ards first try came from sonme good rucking by Captain Mark Patton, and Ethan Davis which secured quick ball from a tap penalty tajken by wing forward Harry Long who broke three tackles to forma ruck on the half way line. Scrum Half Boyd broke bling to sprint half the length of the field untilidsing the blind side for the first score.
Hooker David Patton duly added the conversion.
By this time Civil Service had racked up 31 points mainly from Ards losing the ball in contact leaving The Service to run in unopposed.
The game was halted for an injury toa Civil Service back player who went off to hospital with an ankle injury. All the Ards players and coaches which the young man a speedy recovery.
The second half started a little brighter for Ards with ball retention and going forward in posession fixed on the Ards players’ minds. From some good team play Ards worked the ball into the Civil Service 10m line however from the ruck Civil had once again regained posession howver when the ball came across the line wing forward Long and prop Stewart Tweedy were able to stop The Service attck with some strong tacling to turn over the ball for Scum hald boyd to collect and score from the half way line. Hooker Patton duly converted. Civil Service 31 Ards 14.
As the game progressed the lack of fittnes of the Ards team showed with Civil Service running in tries to leave the game poised at 52 to 14. To Ars team credit they battled on anf rom a scrumon the Ards line Scrum half Boyd again broke bling to find outside half Marcus McCormick on his shoulder in support, Boyd regained the ball form McComick on a loop to hug the touchline only for a Civil Service defender to take him out too high. The Ref awarded a penaly try and David Patton duly converted.
In tha last ten minutes of the game Civil showed their superior fitness and ran in more three tries .
