UPS sponsored Ards U16s travelled to Telford Park, Newry last Saturday morning looking forward to their Ulster Carpets U16 Coast league match.
Such has been the growth of the U16 squad that despite the unavailability of a number of players, Ards still managed to travel with 15 players.
Newry appeared the bigger team but Ards more than matched them, the Ards forwards scrummaged well and the backs moved the ball at every opportunity.
However, this was not to be enough as Newry took advantage of Ards being reduced to 13 players losing winger Lucas Boyd and then flanker John Fisher with head injuries, both players were a big loss as Boyd was making great ground with ball in hand and Fisher was tenacious in the tackle.
Try scorers for Ards were Captain Callum O’Hanlon, 2nd row Oisin Savage and outhalf Ollie McKee, O’Hanlon and McKee were successful with 2 conversions.
Ards Director of Rugby Stevie Nutt travelled with the team and was pleased to see at first hand that the hard work being done by the players and coaches was starting to show.
Ards Youth U14s & U16s now look forward to this Saturday's local derby against Donaghadee at Hamilton Park with 11am kick offs.
