Ards U14s 54 v Ophir 0
With the Ulster Carpets Youth League coming close an end, Ards U14s hosted Ophir at Hamilton Park. The first encounter of these two teams, was a closely fought game with Ards coming away the victor, this time Ophir were more prepared and had recruited some larger lads to strengthen their forward pack. The conditions were cold and both teams were sluggish to start but whenever Ards got their first touch of the ball, it was clear they were going to continue their winning streak. With less than two minutes gone, Vice Captain Harry McCarroll went over in the corner for a spectacular individual try, the conversion was missed. Ards U14s 5 v Ophir 0
From the restart Ards continued in determined fashion, it was then the turn of Captain Callum O'Hanlon to go over for the first of his fives tries of the day, again the wind was strong and conversion was missed.
Ards continued to press on and went over for three more tries from Captain Callum O'Hanlon, outside centre Sam Pilcher and fly half Ethan Bell. On these occasions, all were converted and the half time score was 31-0
The second half started the same as the first, with Ards not giving any ground. A few handling errors gave Ophir possession but this was quickly recovered by strong tackling and rucking. Once space opened in the centre, O'Hanlon was away again to go over for two further tries that were converted by new kicker Oliver McKee. Ards were unfortunate not to have scored through hooker Ben Bailie, when Ophir managed to hold him up on the line and the same for winger Chris Harris a minute later. The Ards forwards dominated the scrums and it wasn't long before they too began scoring, second row Paul Fitzsimons getting a well deserved unconverted try. The wind picked up again and affected the conversion and pulled the ball wide of the posts.
With only 10 minutes played in the second half, O'Hanlon was over for his fifth try of the day.
Both sets of coaches agreed to call it a day with 15 minutes left to play. Final score 54-0 Ards.
