Ards U14s travelled to Gibson Park last Saturday to play a well organised and experienced Malone in the first round of the Ulster Youth League Cup. Malone attempted to use their large forward pack to gain pitch position but the Ards pack where not found wanting and competed at the breakdown and were able to mount counter attacks.
With both sides testing their strengths and weaknesses, Malone were first to exploit the gaps appearing in the Ards defence and ran in an unopposed try.
Ards’ intensity then fell away and Malone were able to dominate the battle of the forwards, with some strong runs and carries which resulted in Malone scores.
With the score running away from the young Ards men, it looked as if the game was over but with encouragement from their coaches and inspiring work from the Ards Captain Callum O'Hanlon, matched by his acting Vice Captain David Patton, they continued to give it their all and never gave up.
Ards’ efforts were rewarded with a well-deserved team try by O’Hanlon, Ethan Bell converted well.
Ards came away unsuccessful but look forward to next Saturday’s match at Hamilton Park against Cavan in the Shield.
