The 'Battle of the Borough' ends all square...

ARNOLD TOWN 2 GEDLING MW 2

Monday 27th August 2018 3pm

East Midlands Counties League

The Battle of the Borough certainly lived up to its name as the two local sides met each other here at Eagle Valley.

The Eagles still smarting from an 11-1 defeat here on Saturday to Ingles FC were still looking for their first points of the season whilst the Miners had a confidence boosting 4-2 win against, ironically, Ingles FC at Plains Road last Saturday to record their first points of the season.

The Miners were quick to show their intent from the off as they rattled the home sides cross bar early on but a fairly even half went the way of the Eagles when Curtis Millward spun and fired inside the post to put the home side in front on the half hour. The visitors seemed to struggle with the wind behind them, over hitting the ball too often.
HT 1-0

The second half saw the Eagles seemingly pegged back in their own half as Gedling started to take control. The introduction of the old Master, Chris Freestone, Arnold’s all-time leading scorer swung the game in favour of the Miners and It was no surprise when the equaliser came.
Arnold stopper Elliott tipped a terrific shot from ex Eagle Mason Coy around the post on seventy-two minutes and from the resulting corner Dwayne Brown netted for the Miners following a scramble in the area.
With ten minutes to go, a break down the left by Jepson caught the Eagles defence napping, his pinpoint cross finding Freeo’ who coolly slotted into an empty net to put the Miners into what looked like a winning position but there was to be a further twist, deep into injury time when the Referee pointed to the spot, a somewhat harsh decision by all accounts, must say I didn’t see what happened so can’t comment. Curtis Millward stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to level it with virtually the last kick of the game.
The decision was hotly disputed and arguments continued after the final whistle, the referee certainly got an ear bashing from the Miners bench but nothing was going to change the result.
FT 2-2

The Eagles will be glad to get off the mark, a result which lifts them two places off the bottom of the table. A revenge mission next week as they play the return fixture at Graham St Prims who won 6-1 at Eagle Valley a week ago.
