Ashton Athletic hosted West Didsbury & Chorlton after a good 6-2 victory against Congleton Town on Saturday, but once again ever since the 7-2 FA Cup victory against Mossley, their inconsistent form struck again with a disappointing defeat against a good West Didsbury side who took their chances and left Brocstedes Park with all 3 points and leaving the management trio of Dougie, Ben and Jay scratching their heads at how they let the game slip away.

The Yellows came into the game with the same team that defeated Congleton Town and they started strongly but were suffered a huge blow when Luke Holden went off injured, being replaced by Joe Sargent. Sargent slotted in at right back with Aaron Cringle moving into the centre to partner Sam Bailey.

Ashton had the ball in the back of the net in the 8th minute. A high corner is dropped by keeper Hayden Buckley-Smith and headed home but the referee deems the keeper had been fouled. West had a couple of chances that didn't trouble Martin Pearson in goal and the Yellows had 2 chances but couldn't make them count.

West Didsbury took the lead in the 18th minute. Ben Woods robbed Joe Sergant on half way life and ran across the pitch. He laid a through ball into the path of Jonathan Poizer who slotted the ball past Martin Pearson from the edge of the box.

West had the chance to make it 2-0. Ashley Woods carried the ball into the Ashton box but Martin Pearson made an excellent save from his fierce shot from 6 yards out, then Anthony Potts fired a header over the bar from a corner.

The Yellows then hand numerous chances to level the score. Marcus Cusani made a good run along the left wing to cross for Isaac Kusaloka to receive the ball unmarked but he hit a poor effort wide of the goal. Joel Brownhill headed a Adam Howard cross straight at the West keeper and the keeper made another save from a Marcus Cusani shot.

It was West Didsbury who finished the half stronger. A high ball is played into the box, Martin Pearson let it bounce by and failed to hold the ball as he jumped with an attacker. Who lobs the ball towards an empty net but over the bar. Then nother chance from West as a cross from the right finds Jonathan Pozier unmarked but he completely misses the ball.

Ashton once again started the half stronger and had good chances from Isaac Kusaloka, Marcus Cusani and Adam Howard, all of which couldn't hit the target. The Yellows were having good opportunities to but the ball in the back of the net, but once again they were unable to convert the chances, something that has plagued them many times this season.

West Didsbury then made it 2-0. A cross from the left saw a volley hit the bar and was headed back in where Rob Black fired into the net. The Ashton players were claiming for offside but the were waved away the the referee's assistant.

Three minutes later it was 2-1. Marcus Cusani received the ball on the left of the box and fired a left foot shot just inside the far post to score his first goal in Ashton colours.

On 76 minutes it was 2-2 and Marcus Cusani got his second as his free kick on the edge of the box was fired round the wall and through the keeper to level the game.

The winner for West Didsbury came with 7 minutes of the game left. The ball was played right through the middle of the defence finding Robert Black who slotted home past Martin Pearson.

Ashton pressed to find an equaliser but a lack of cutting edge meant that the West defence held firm for the win. Once again failure to take more of the many good chances they had cost them the game against a team who looked dangerous at times on the break.

The result moves West into 6th place with 25 points and leaves the Yellows in 17th on 14 points with a difficult trip to high fliers Runcorn Town on Saturday.
