Ashton Athletic 5 Warrington Town 2

After a number of cup games over the last few weeks it was good for the lads to get back to their league games and face a tough challenge against Warrington Town.
Due to the weather this week and 2 games being played on the pitch, the surface was quite muddy and cut up badly, making it difficult for both sets of players.
Ashton started well and took the lead in less than 10 minutes as Alex Ashby broke down the right, crossing the ball into the 6 yard box and Harry Johnson improvised, chesting the ball home as it bounced up at an awkward height.
Playing for the opposition was ex-Ashton stalwart Luke Nunnerley, but unfortunately he was given a straight red card after 20 minutes for a challenge on Steve Franklin.
Minutes later Warrington's striker broke through and centre back Ryan Smith gave away a foul in the box which looked a dubious decision, as the closest official, the linesman didn't give it. Warrington were awarded the penalty by the ref, which they converted and Smith booked for the challenge. 1-1.
Ashton had a number of chances to extend their lead against the 10 men but it was Alex Ashby, having an outstanding game terrorizing the left back , who got the second goal. Winning the ball off the defender giving him a one on one with the keeper and slotting home with great quality.
Unfortunately Ashton had another set back as Ryan Smith received his 2nd yellow card for a foul on the Warrington striker. Half time 2-1 to Ashton.
Second half we were flying and after 5 minutes Aaron Simpson played a lovely weighted through ball for Jamie Charnock to finish and increase our lead.
Jake Taylor playing at right back scored the 4th, finishing off an Alex Ashby cross from 2 yards after making the initial pass and carrying on his run.
Warrington didn't want to go down without a fight and scored their second from a break down the right. Lewis Goulding could only palm out the cross onto the oncoming Warrinton player who finished well, making it 4-2.
Ashton saved the best till last as Harry Johnson playing wide left cut in and from 25 yards hit a superb shot that went over the keepers head and into the top corner. A quality finish to a very entertaining game.
Man of the Match was Ashton's Charlie Middlemore for a great shift in both midfield and defence, playing at centre back.
Well done lads, 4th in the league, 5 points behind the leaders but with 3 games in hand.
