Following the first teams late late heroics v Bury, its was Bury U13s that were to come from behind in Lancs Cup on sunday after Ashton had lead 15-10 at the break, tries from Riley Newall, Ethan Sykes , Leighton Parker and Harvey Merrills werent enough to overcome Bury this time.
Ashton U16s played their Cup game with 11 players with no recognised second rows, the opposition had a squad of 17 and on a boggy pitch it was looking like a long 70 mins. Ashton started brightly from the kick off a well worked try from Liam Tobin converted by Ton Ainsworth, it nearly happened again from the restart but the hosts turned it over and scored their own try for 5-7. New second rowers Taylor Brown and Sam Callaghan were outstanding and the rest of the pack held their own and at times dominated the larger opposition.Great teamwork lead to 2 Tom Ainsworth tries the second converted by Ethan Booth for 5-19. Two quick tries and a conversion brought it back to 17-19 , followed by a yellow to Ashton now down to 10. The lads dug in and almost got a breakaway try . A further yellow did not see heads drop for the short time they were down to 9, once back to full strength tries from Tom and Sam Callaghan after a superb kick in behind from Liam and good support play.
A converted Burn try left it 24-31 , but not to be outdone Tom Ainsworth broke down the left for his fourth try . The last 10 saw the visitors under huge pressure with Burn scoring with 8 mins to go for 31-36, Ashton held out for a superb victory. This is the abridged version of a Jon Lee txt, I felt like I had played in the game after reading it, phew.
The minis played Glossop on a rainy morning at Ashton some fantastic tries from all the sides with much better tackling from my lads, kept them warm anyway, too cold to keep score well done to all who made it happen.
Senior Colts friendly at Marple was called off due to pitch problems, both first and seconds play Marple this coming weekend firsts at home seconds away, please support the lads.
