Brave Robins fall short

Report by David Robinson.

Ashton twice came from two goals down at Hurst Cross before eventually succumbing to play-off chasing Telford in a seven goal thriller. With leading scorer Matty Chadwick departed the hosts gave a debut to Connor Dimaio and welcomed Craig Hobson back into the attack but it was the Bucks forced into a change after just 5 minutes as Henry Cowans was helped off after a challenge with Sam Sheridan.
3 minutes later and left back Swaby Neavin was possibly lucky to only see yellow after catching Theo Streete with a high challenge and Dimaio then saw his 20 yard shot blocked. 20 minutes in and the hosts moved ahead as Knights’ left wing cross found Morgan-Smith unmarked 6 yards out and he headed home comfortably, and 4 minutes later the centre forward was again unchallenged as he steered Morley’s corner well off target.
On the half hour strike partner Daniel Udoh picked up a long clearance and beat both centre backs before providing an assured left foot finish but within a minute the Robins were back in it as good work saw Liam Martin reach the by line and an attempted clearance saw the ball rebound home off Sam Sheridan – possibly justice for the fortunate equaliser the Bucks scored in the reverse fixture.
Morgan-Smith then fired over after Udoh had appeared to foul Matt Regan and Udoh fired another long ball wastefully over.

On the stroke of half time Martin set up Dimaio whose placed effort was palmed away by Bursik but within 6 minutes of the restart Telford struck again as Udoh’s clever pass found Morgan-Smith and he cut inside for a confident finish.

On 70 minutes Ashton found a lifeline as Sheridan’s free kick was headed on by Jennings for fellow sub Kallum Mantack to squeeze his effort in at the near post and within two minutes the winger cut inside and saw his shot squirm underneath Bursik for the equaliser. The visitors were clearly rattled but showed their class as a neat build up saw Deeney’s cross guided home by Udoh for his fourth goal this season against the Robins and Morgan-Smith could have made matters secure as he exchanged passes with Knights but was just denied by McMahon.

Ashton Utd: McMahon, Crowley, Swaby-Neavin (Chalmers 59), Regan, Ashworth, Kay (Mantack 55), Sheridan, Goulding, Martin (Jennings 55), Hobson, Dimaio. SNU: Tomsett, Reed.
