FORMER Barrow Raiders stalwart Jamie Butler returns to his roots as the Villagers start their campaign in the National Conference Division One.
However, not joining him in the 17-man squad is Kris Tyson, the ever-alert full-back who was also with Raiders last season.
Tyson – along with Tom Butler – is nursing injury, while Matty Heaton looks forward to his first stint at this level following his departure from Craven Park.
In what appears to be a strong outfit, Barry Pugh is raring to go after earlier stating that he would retire from the game. Pugh had a troublesome cartilage operated on after making just one appearance last season.
Dan Sayle is unavailable, but back on home soil after two years Down Under is the influential Sam Dowsett.
Askam coach Mike Wilson said ahead of new season: “The lads have worked hard in pre-season, although we have not had too much time on the pitch through the bad weather, but we are well prepared.
“We don’t know much about the Judes – only that they were a higher division side last season.
“They could be re-building so we will be on our toes. They have always been a top side and they have a great catchment area.
“I am looking forward to the season and aim to get a winning start.”
