Salford City Roosters 20 Askam 62

ASKAM made it back-to-back National Conference Division Two wins with a crushing victory on the road in Salford.

The Villagers, on the back of a good home win against Saddleworth seven days earlier, opened the scoring when full-back Russ Bolton broke through the Roosters defence after four minutes. Adam Jackson converted.

Askam increased their lead five minutes later, when winger Jack Cairns scored out wide.

The Salford side reduced the arrears to 4-14 through winger Pat Harrison, before Brad Kavanagh scored his first try for the senior Askam side, the prop receiving a return pass having broken the Roosters defence. Jackson converted.

Salford scored a converted try on the stroke of half-time to make the score 16-8.

The second half saw the Villagers play attractive rugby, breaking the home defence at will, with tries from Tom Askew, Tom Wilkinson, Ben Lewney (2) and Bolton. Jackson converted four of the five and it was 44-8.

Roosters reduced the arrears with a converted try through their man-of-the-match Joe Connor with 10 minutes remaining, but the visitors ran in three converted tries through Tom Hopkins, Alex Brailsford and Russ Bolton – completing his hat-trick. The home side scored a late consolation.

Jackson was man-of-the-match for his excellent distribution and for converting nine of 11 tries

Russ Bolton was voted players player with 11 votes
