It is with tremendous sadness that we have to announce the passing of former player Gary Simkins on Boxing Day.

Gary joined AOE as part of the Castle Vale crew in the late '70's alongside his partner in crime Martin Grech. We were fortunate at that time to have excellent links with Castle Vale, which saw an influx of teachers, former pupils and friends including Brian Kelly, Steve Dyer, Dave Dyer, Terry Green and many others, primarily through the great work of Jill Grundy in promoting AOE to fellow staff and pupils.

Gary formed half of a destructive double act with Martin Grech, both on and off the field . As dynamic back row forwards they were a formidable pairing for any opposition, and were a staple part of Sam Grundy's successful sides in the later 70's and early 80's. Off the field they were equally adept at causing mayhem - and much amusement. Gary was truly one of the characters of Aston Old Eds, and many will remember some of his escapades - standing fully clothed in the showers after a tour game to congratulate the players on a great win, and then heading straight into the bar dripping with water; being sent off 'for his own safety' after over enjoying a pre match drink, with the game stopping every couple of minutes to check that Gary was OK and still sleeping it off under a bush by the side of the pitch - having a red sauce fight in the clubhouse to celebrate its re-opening after a refurbishment.

Gary was full of life, a larger than life character, who lived life to the full - and will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by all of his friends at AOE. Our commiserations go to his family, friends and colleagues.
