This match was supposed a home match for Burton, but their pitch was waterlogged.
The game started at a frenetic pace, and for the first ten minutes Burton were camped in the Aston 22, fiercely attacking the Aston line. Aston managed to hold out, with some strong tackling, and this tenacity set the scene for the rest of the match.
Aston gradually gained ground with forward surges, and once in the Burton 22, Jennie broke away from a maul, but was stopped short of the line. However, from the resulting set piece she regained possession to score under the posts.
With confidence rising, Aston gained possession from a turnover in the Burton half, and from the resulting three quarter move Caiomhe broke through to score under the posts, with Rachel adding the conversion.
Both teams were defending strongly in midfield, neither willing to give way, but from another excellent three quarter move, Caiomhe again broke the Burton line to score, with Rachel adding the conversion. Caiomhe was causing Burton great problems, and she again broke through to complete her hat trick of tries.
Burton never stopped trying and some of their tackling was quite fierce, but they were unable to retain sufficient possession to trouble the Aston line, and their attacks were resisted, with Aston quickly turning defence into attack: the ball passing through many hands before Bex managed to cross the line for an unconverted try.
Burton tried to finish the game as they began, but Aston’s strong tackling again came to the fore, and once again turned defence into attack. With superb handling between backs and forwards the result was another fine try by Caiomhe to finish an excellent all round team performance.
