Midlands 2 West (North) Aston Old Edwardians 38 Tamworth 12

Aston produced a scintillating display to beat previously unbeaten Tamworth, with the power of the forwards linking superbly with the silky running of their backs. Such was the early domination of Aston, that a bonus point was gained with just a quarter of the game played, with the home side running in 4 tries, all converted by Tom McNamee. The first came with only 2 minutes on the clock, with Full Back Rob Chesner intercepting 10 yards from his own line, when it appeared that Tamworth would work an overlap, and then sprinting 90 yards to score under the posts.

Immediately from the kick-off, Mick Tate, who was to wreak havoc amongst the Tamworth defence throughout the game, made the first of his many charges and when the ball was re-cycled Fly Half Barry Maksymczuk dummied his way through the first line of defence and put a clever grubber kick behind the Tamworth backline which Wing Matt O’Hare gathered and touched down in the left corner. With MacNamee on fine form with the boot, the conversion put Aston 14 point sup in under 5 minutes.

On 12 minutes, with the Aston front 5 creating all kinds of problems for their opposition in the set piece, another Maksymczuk break in midfield saw him link with Chesner who made 25 yards before looking to release Centre Andy Wood. However, Wood was tackled off the ball, and the referee awarded a Penalty Try , adjudging that a try would have been scored had it not been for the infringement.

As the first quarter of the game came to an end, Chesner found himself on the end of another sweeping Aston back move, and glided in to score under the posts. With MacNamee adding the conversion, the bonus point was assured as Aston swept into a 28-0 lead.

Tamworth looked shell shocked, but responded positively and their pressure resulted in a try for their right wing after the ball had been moved from left to right and the Aston defence had been stretched. A 30 yard break by MacNamee almost resulted in a further try for Aston but was stopped by a desperate cover tackle, in which MacNamee suffered a shoulder injury. He was replaced by Conor Davies, with flanker Lea Ross moving out to the wing .

Second Row Ross Midgely was shown a yellow card just before half time and either side of the break Tamworth attempted to use their numerical advantage to narrow the gap. A strong tackle and drive by Prop John Fallon denied them early in the second half, and when Aston cleared their lines it appeared that they may have weathered the storm. However, with just 30 seconds remaining on the sin-bin, a Tamworth line out take was driven on by their forwards and they trundled over in the corner to reduce the deficit to 28-12.

Shortly after a Maksymczuk drop goal attempt narrowly missed, Ian Turner replaced Steve Knibbs in the front row. Aston continued to maintain their supremacy in the front 5, with Chris Maksymczuk performing well at hooker after playing the first 2 games of the season in the back row.

The Aston pack were providing plenty of good ball for their backs, and Maksymczuk was orchestrating his charges brilliantly – with Adam Ward often being the link that created space for his outside runners. It was another clean break by Chesner, after a line outtake by Tate, that forced Tamworth to concede a penalty in their own 22, and Maksymczuk duly added the 3 points.

With the game drawing to a close, Russell Parker replaced the veteran Martin Franklin in the back row to make his 1st XV debut. In almost the last move of the game, Matt O’Hare grabbed his second try of the game, after coming off his wing and picking a fine line to breach the Tamworth defence. Maksymczuk added the conversion and Aston ran out winners 38-12.

Rob Chesner and Mike Tate were named as Back and Forward of the match respectively, but this was fine all round performance.

Next week Aston entertain Bridgnorth at Sunnybank Avenue
