Atherstone Town progress to the 4th Round of the FA Vase with a penalty shoot out win.

Atherstone Town progressed to the 4th Round of the FA Vase with penalty shoot out victory over Stourport Swifts on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors had taken the lead in the first half, before captain Jamie Hood equalised in the second half, sending the game to penalties.

Mitch Piggon, Lewis Noon, Ryan Quinn and Louis Baker converted their spot kick, as two Stourport misses sent the Adders through.

The draw for the next round takes place on Monday afternoon.

Atherstone and Stourport had already met once this season, with Swifts picking up a narrow 1-0 win. Stourport have kicked on from that point and would certainly provide a stiff test.

Much like in the previous meeting, Stourport were organised and combative, making life difficult in all areas for the Adders as they controlled the first half. Atherstone looked the create chances on the counter attack, with Chris Cowley and Callum Carsley providing the most threat.

Atherstone struggled to create clear cut chances, and would soon be punished by their clinical opponents. A ball in behind was just kept in play, and pulled back to Jack Watts who finished comfortably to put the visitors in front.

Few could argue with Stourports half time lead, and strong words would be needed for the Adders to turn it around. Whatever was said the dressing had the desired effect, as Atherstone came out much improved in the second half.

The Adders saw more of the ball in better positions, but were still struggling to carve out clear cut chances. Attacking substitutions gave them more impetus, and it became clear that set pieces would be key.

It was a free kick that lead to the leveller just over 15 minutes from time. A Callum Carsley free kick was swung towards the back post where Jamie Hood rose highest to head home via the far post.

Both teams had half chances before the final whistle, but when it blew everyone knew what loomed. A huge positive for the Adders was the home support that gathered behind the goal as the shoot out began.

Mitch Piggon stepped up and converted the first penalty, with Stourport replying in kind. Lewis Noon slotted home the second, before a horrendous miss from the Stourport captain.

Ryan Quinn put Atherstone in command with a calm third, before Stourport replied to make it 3-2. Louis Baker was just able to squeeze home the fourth, before a second skied penalty sent the Adders through, and the fans and players into wild celebrations.

With a league rival overcome, Atherstone now await Mondays draw to see who and where they will play in the next round. One thing is for certain, no one will not to play at the Pointons Community Stadium in front of that crowd in a hurry.

Next up for the Adders is the visit of Halesowen in the Birmingham Senior Cup on Tuesday night. The next league game will see them travel to take on Racing Club Warwick on Saturday 10th.

It looks as though another cup run could be on the cards, with four games separating Atherstone and a trip to Wembley. Be sure to get along and play your part in the journey.
