My thoughts on the season so far..
After a poor start losing the first two games, I did think to myself that we needed time to gel to a system that was put in front of us, which was a 3-5-2, and considering we beat some good teams during pre-season with it starting the domestic season we just couldn't get the results.
Once we got our first win against Brightlingsea away, changing to a 4-3-3. We then went on a great run and that's really where the togetherness and the character was shown from the more youthful players in the team, as they started chipping in and helping more senior players like myself.
Willand FC came along in the FA Cup where the buzz and the feeling of losing was never an option. It came to us at the moment where we were just winning and grinding out results and I think that was a turning point in our season, we lost ourselves after losing away to a team we should of beat on paper but in football anything happens.
From that defeat we went on a bad run of games where we couldn't close a door or we didn't turn up and found it difficult to get out of a rut, and it was like being at the finish line in a race but never quite crossing it.
One thing I have learnt about this team is that we definitely have the capabilities of beating any team in the division, but it really does depend on what Aveley turns up.
Our best performances have to be beating Sudbury away, Needham at home and Chatham away in the league. But that same work ethic, togetherness and remaining patient in the other games coming up will see us be in the right position in the league and that's challenging for the play-offs at least.
This is now the business end of the season, and it's time that the boys and myself roll up our sleeves and take no teams for granted every week, because I think that is what has undone us in some games with the mentality of believing that the game is won before a ball has been kicked.
What this league has shown me over the years is that everyone beats everyone and the league table doesn't lie. The better teams are more consistent in spells and now we need to go on a good run of games.
We are in a good position to be competing for the play-offs as a realistic target and I do hope to be there come end of the season.
As a team we just got to earn the right to be there and take no prisoners by sticking together and most importantly enjoying what we enjoy most, and that is winning.
I am a winner and always believe that we can turn things around and even when we are pinned back in games, I still believe that we will get something out of any game I'm involved in.
As long as I'm involved in games I will shout, curse and encourage to get the job done as my behaviour on the pitch is never personal it's just my way of handling business.
See you in the play-offs...
