The 5-2 defeat to Canvey Island and the disappointing performance that came with it meant that Aveley are now winless in three, having lost 2-1 and 3-2 to Tilbury and Maldon respectively in the league.

Saturday’s opponents, Soham, have also been on a poor run of form as of late. After losing five on the bounce with defeats to Heybridge, Witham, St Ives, VCD and Dereham, Steve Fallon’s side finally got back to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 win away at Erith last weekend.

The two sides last met on the final day of last season when Aveley were forced to share the points after a penalty was given to the hosts in the sixth minute of stoppage time after just the two had been signalled.

That penalty was the difference between Aveley facing Maldon over Thamesmead in the end of season play offs – something which Gardner said he actually preferred in his post-match comments.

But after a poor run in league and cup the Millers boss will want to make sure his side come away with all three points this time around.

Bradley Thomas, who was an unused substitute in the game against Canvey, is back in the squad having missed two games through work commitments.

Club captain, Billy Holland, will also be looking to get back into the side having been rested against Canvey due to recent niggling injury problems, but one player certainly missing is Brian Okwera who is recovering from a broken arm suffered in the cup win against Waltham Forest.
