Millers pick up clean sheet in latest friendly win

Millers pick up clean sheet in latest friendly win

Colin Munford

Enfield 1893 0, Aveley 1

Aveley produced a solid performance in picking up their first clean sheet of the pre-season in this 1-0 victory at Goldsdown Road.
The match was the first the Millers have played on grass so far this term, though the training pitch behind the main ground was used with the first team pitch currently unplayable.
And a strong Aveley squad started in fine form and got what proved to be the only goal of the game with only seven minutes on the clock.
A pinpoint ball was put into the box and Marc Sontag was at the back post where he produced a fine fierce volley into the back of the net from just on the edge of the area.
Gardner’s outfit played some attractive football in the opening period, but failed to find another goal.
But they were rarely troubled up the other end as centre halves Steve Willis and man-of-the-match Jay Leader marshalled the defence, with little for goalkeeper Dave McCartney to deal with.
Shane Oakley produced another effort just after the half hour but the Enfield 1893 goalkeeper done well to save.
The Millers continued to be threatening on the attack, especially from dead ball situations. On one particular occasion Leader was unable to get full contact on a Jack Stevenson corner.
Daniel Francis also managed to find the target but the home keeper was able to easily save as the opening half drew to a close.
After the break substitute Sheldon Sellears forced another good save from the Enfield 1893 keeper who acrobatically pushed the effort behind for a corner.
Aveley continued to keep the home side at bay at relative ease, with substitute keeper Ronnie Worster having a relatively danger free half.
Junior Appiah produced a pin-point ball into the box which found Billy Holland unmarked in the area but the striker’s header was saved by the keeper.
Michael Begg went close to adding to the Millers lead late in the match when he managed to jink his way through several attempted tackles from the hosts but was unable to get an effort away on goal.
Aveley squad: Dave McCartney, Ronnie Worster, Carl Patten, Paul Burnett, Jack Stevenson, Jay Leader, Steve Willis, Marc Sontag, Ricky Edwards, Shane Oakley, Daniel Francis, Lee Sontag, Dan Gillard, Sheldon Sellears, Scott Curley, Michael Begg, Billy Holland, Junior Appiah, Tom Querry, Jay Knight.
