Aveley started the livelier of the two sides, creating 4 or 5 good chances in the opening quarter of an hour. The best of these was a long range effort from Nicky Symons which brought an excellent save from Hampton keeper Matt Lovett at the foot of his right-hand post. From this the ball was knocked across goal where Mitch Hahn hit a shot from 8yards out on the angle but once again Lovett was there to make another good save.
Hampton then came more into the game and had the better of things for the next 15-20 minutes without seriously testing Jamie Lunan. The best of Hampton’s efforts were long range shots from Marcello Fernandes and Barrie Matthews.
An uncharacteristically poor kick from Lunan was collected by Craig Dundas but the keeper recovered to make a good save.
Millers finished the half strongly, going close on a couple of occasions.
The second half commenced with Hampton once again looking like the team more likely to score. However, in a rare Millers’ attack after 73 minutes Junior Dadson cut in from the left wing and shot from the edge of the Penalty Area. His shot took a deflection off defender Orlando Jeffrey which left the Hampton keeper rooted to the spot as the ball nestled into the far corner of the net.
The lead only lasted for seven minutes before Dundas collected the ball in a central position just outside the box and hit a dipping shot over Lunan and under the bar.
Hampton had chances to take the lead when shots from Jamie Collins and Ian Hodges both went close.
Sherwin Stanley had a late opportunity to put Millers through to the next round. He broke away from the defence but the on rushing Lovett did enough to put him off and his shot missed the left-hand post by two or three feet.
Millers held out for the remaining minutes and now have another chance on Wednesday evening.
