Millers lose at Burgess

Millers lose at Burgess

Jamie Manktelow

James Webster's Millers were defeated in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy by two goals to nil.

The Millers travelling faithful might've had a feeling of deja vu throughout this game as Aveley played well but unfortunately found themselves on the end of decisions that just didn't go our way.

We started the game well with our forwards having a lot of the ball but just couldn't create anything early on. Jeremiah Maja came close to finding top-scorer Jordan Watson but the Burgess Hill keeper was able to cut the ball out before we had a sight of goal.

On 17 minutes Millers right-back Paul Preston was booked after a late tackle sent Pat Harding to the floor. From the free-kick, the ball landed to Curtis Gayler and it was comfortably saved by Rhys Madden.

We came back well with another good spell as we controlled good amounts of possession. Good work from Nathan Koranteng played it to George Doyle, but the latter's effort was off target. Two minutes later Paul Preston crossed for Jeremiah Maja at the back-post, but this time it was Elphick who intercepted and cleared.

On the half-hour mark, the hosts had their first real chance which saw Millers keeper Rhys Madden commit himself, the ball was played back to Javier Favarel who then saw his effort hit a mound of players on the line and scrambled away for a corner. From the resulting corner the Bostik Premier League side took the lead, a simple cross, and a simple header from close range from Lee Harding found the back-of-the-net to see the Millers behind. Burgess Hill Town 1-0 Aveley.

After that opener the Millers did seem a bit down as chances came for the hosts, first it was right-back Joey Taylor who was in on goal but curled his left-footed effort over the bar. Then Rhys Madden made a smart save to keep out Pat Harding to keep the score at 1-0.

However, five minutes before half-time that deficit of one goal was doubled in controversial circumstances. A corner came in for the hosts, it was caught by Rhys Madden and Millers looked to attack. But the referee blew for a penalty as Alex Stephenson was adjudged to have pulled down a Burgess Hill player. Pat Harding stepped up and sent Rhys Madden the wrong way to double the hosts lead. Burgess Hill Town 2-0 Aveley.

Just before half-time we almost pulled ourselves back within one, but Gary Elphick was there in the nick of time to deny Alex Stephenson from scoring from close range.

Half Time | Burgess Hill Town 2-0 Aveley.

The Millers started brilliantly, and within two minutes we should've had a penalty. Jordan Watson through on goal and was completely taken out as he was shoved to the floor, however, the penalty wasn't given.

Moments later Jeremiah Maja had an effort towards goal blocked by a mix of a goalkeeper and defender.

We controlled the ball for most of the second half but just lacked the clear-cut chances to get ourselves back in the game. It was a very stop-start affair as one team went down, a free-kick would undoubtedly follow. George Woodward swung in a dangerous cross but it was cut out again by the hosts' keeper.

But the most controversial decision of the game was again to deny the Millers a spot kick. You could hear the clip and see the touch on George Woodward as he surged into the hosts' area, but somehow nothing was given, George got straight up and made a brilliant tackle, getting all of the ball and none of the man but a free-kick was given to Burgess Hill.

In the last ten minutes we had numerous long range efforts, but unfortunately none caused the hosts any real problems. Burgess Hill had one more chance in the game when Aaron Smith-Joseph effort 25-yards out cracked the crossbar.
