Aveley make Essex Senior Cup Final!!!

Colin Munford

Millers reach final for third time in 10 years- but will be hoping it goes slightly better than the last two!

AVELEY HAVE MADE their third Essex Senior Cup Final in 10 years after a 2-1 success over League Two side Southend United.
The hosts hit them from the off and a mixed Southend side of fringe and youth players found themselves two goals down with only 16 minutes on the clock.
The Millers hit the visitors from the off with two goals in the opening 16 minutes.
Sherwin Stanley held off defender Adetayo Osifuwa before finding strike partner Tamer Tuna who rounded keeper Glenn Morris and fire the home side in front.
The recent improvement showed by Carl Griffiths’ men has given Aveley renewed hope of Ryman Premier survival.
If one move showed the improvement seen by the Mill Field faithful it was the move which led to the second goal.
A neat interchange down the right touchline involving Danny Slatter, Orlando Smith, Tuna and Andy Howell saw the latter find the back of the net from Smith’s lay off.
Stanley should have netted a third and put the result beyond any doubt when Tony Russell’s blocked clearance found the striker unmarked and he raced clear of the defence only to shoot straight at the oncoming Morris.
But a rare defensive mistake from Aveley got the Shrimpers back into the match 10 minutes before the break.
Dave McCartney came out for a free kick but didn’t gather, and by the time the ball had been recycled into the box Kyle Asante was on hand to nod home.
The second period wasn’t as high in drama as what had gone before, with the hosts enjoying plenty of possession, only to lack the killer instinct in front of goal.
With seven minutes of normal time remaining Tuna saw a weak shot was easily gathered by Morris, but there was plenty of threatening though balls which just evaded the hard working strike duo of Stanley and Tuna.
The home side had to endure a few nervous moments towards the end but kept their cool, despite a stoppage time corner
They will now be hoping for a better result than the last two – a 5-0 loss to Chelmsford City in 2002/03 and Thurrock a year later 3-1, as well as sparking a revival in Ryman Premier fortunes.
Aveley: Dave McCartney, Spencer Harrison, Charlie Read, Tony Russell, Sean Francis, Danny Slatter (Josh Llewellyn 29), Andy Howell, Kenny Beaney, Sherwin Stanley, Tamer Tuna, Orlando Smith.
Subs not used: Tommy Cummings, Alfie Dady, Bradley Djallo, Ryan Andrews.
