Aveley defeated by National League side Gateshead in the 4th qualifying round

Aveley, a team with aspirations of reaching the First Round proper of the Emirates FA Cup for only the second time in their history, faced a formidable challenge against Gateshead, a strong National League side known for their impressive away performances this season.

Gateshead was determined to avoid a repeat of their disappointing exit in the fourth qualifying round to lower opposition, a fate they suffered in last season’s competition.

The match began with Gateshead asserting their dominance, reflecting their superior league standing.

They controlled the first half, with Aveley forced to defend deeply, allowing Gateshead to impose their style of play.

Gateshead’s attacking duo, Hurst and Home, were particularly active.

Home managed to fire a shot goal-bound, but it was blocked effectively by Aveley’s defence.

Jacob Butterfield also tested Aveley’s goalkeeper with a powerful shot from the edge of the area, which narrowly missed the right-hand post.

As the first half drew to a close, Gateshead capitalised on a set-piece opportunity. With five minutes remaining, Ferguson found himself unmarked from a corner and headed the ball home from close range, giving the visitors a well-deserved lead.

Half Time: Aveley 0-1 Gateshead.

In the second half, Aveley showed more determination and intent, seeking a way back into the match.

They nearly equalised ten minutes into the half when Ollie Peters struck the ball first time after a poor clearance by Gateshead. However, Gateshead’s goalkeeper, Brooks, made a commendable save to keep his team ahead.

Aveley’s hopes of drawing level were further dashed when their appeals for a handball in the penalty area were dismissed by the referee.

Gateshead then doubled their advantage, with Hurst tapping in the ball after it was played into the centre of the box.

Despite Aveley’s persistent efforts, they were unable to breach Gateshead’s defence.

The visitors sealed their victory with five minutes remaining. Telford and Butterfield both had attempts on goal, but were thwarted by Aveley’s goalkeeper, Joe Wright.

However, Telford was not to be denied for long. He scored from close range on his return from injury, securing Gateshead’s place in the first round proper of the FA Cup.

Full Time: Aveley 0-3 Gateshead.
