Aveley edged out in FA Trophy

Colin Munford

Aveley 0, Bury Town 1

The Millers abysmal FA Carlsberg Trophy record didn’t get any better after slipping to a 1-0 defeat at Mill Field against fellow Ryman Premier side Bury Town.
Bury had beaten Carl Griffiths’ side only a month earlier by the same scoreline at Ram Meadow in the league and yet again one goal proved to be enough in a very scrappy game with little goalmouth action throughout.
The first chance fell to the Millers when the Suffolk side’s new signing and former Football League defender Wayne Brown saw his back pass narrowly fall wide of Marcus Garnham’s goal, while for Richard Watkins’ side Lee Reed headed wide of the mark.
The best chance of the half for the hosts came through Sherwin Stanley when he forced Garnham to tip the ball over his bar from a cross-come-shot.
Otherwise there was little to make note of as both defences were on top for the majority, while neither keeper was really tested until late in the half.
Daryl Robson did force Garnham into a save, but his 25-yard effort was straight at the keeper, with Tony Russell also going close for the Millers.
But Bury turned the tables on their hosts in the second period and Aveley keeper Dave Hogan was forced into a smart save to deny Craig Nurse with the half only two minutes old.
In a spell of dominance for the visitors substitute Billy Clarke saw his effort knocked away by the on loan Dagenham & Redbridge goalkeeper.
A replay looked the most likely with neither side able to break the other’s defence, but that was until 11 minutes from time when Bury secured their place in the second qualifying round, and a tie with Ryman One South side Hythe Town, when Lee Reed struck.
Kieran Leabon’s ball in from the left went straight to Reed at the back post and his effort crept over the line despite attempted clearances from Hogan and Spencer Harrison.

Unused subs: Luke Stanley, Lewis Warren.
