Poor first half gives Wakering all three points

Aveley Football Club

A spirited second half fight back just wasn't enough with the damage done in the first half.

If the Millers took the first half against Maldon & Tiptree and the second half against Great Wakering, we would be guaranteed something from our next match against Waltham Abbey.

Great Wakering started the strongest in this match and took the lead on 9 minutes. No one closed Jake Gordon down as he passed it through the middle of our defence, to a Tom Rangers who was unmarked and one on one with James Marrable, and Ranger finished cooly into the back of the net. GW Rovers 1-0 Millers.

Only a minute later the Millers pulled themselves back in the game. A free-kick from Joe Pearman, was superbly drifted into the back post, it was met by Junior Baker who headed it into the back of the net. GW Rovers 1-1 Millers.

The hosts came back strongly and capped off an amazing 6 minute spell in the first half by re-taking the lead. Harrison missed his header, it landed to Jake Gordon who showed great composure to find the back of the net. GW Rovers 2-1 Aveley.

Great Wakering carried on their first half dominance by creating good chances but they couldn't just carve open those clear cut chances until the last kick of the first half.

It was a simple third goal and one that put the nail in the coffin for the Millers, there was no real cover for the back four whatsoever, it was a simple pass that was pulled back for Jay Nash who tapped into the back of the net unmarked. GW Rovers 3-1 Aveley

Half Time- Great Wakering Rovers 3-1 Aveley.

The Millers came out with fire and desire in the second half. First chance came within a minute as Petrit Elbi's cross landed to Joe Pearman who just fired wide of the target.

Jake Gordon continued to be a thorn in the Millers side, a good bloke this time from Spencer Harrison denied a certain fourth for the hosts.

Joe Pearman went close again, a wonderful save from Adam Seal denied the Millers a goal back. Crossed in from Billy Holland, a bullet header from Pearman was tipped over the bar from seal.

Millers then made a double change, with Teniola and Retkoceri coming on. With Alex Teniola's first touch he rifled a shot into the top corner. The ball landed to him inside the hosts penalty area and be found the top corner of the goal. GW Rovers 3-2 Aveley.

With Millers pushing me forward it allowed the hosts to counter attack. Spencer Harrison took a yellow card for the team, as he took down Jay Nash running through on goal. Up the other end Liam Nash was taken down from behind as Worrell stopped the Millers attack, and was also awarded a yellow card.

Although the Millers controlled the second half there wasn't any real clear cut chances. Joe Pearman made another chance for himself, from the edge of the area he curled a shot just wide of the right hand post.

Great Wakering pushed on for the last few minutes of the match and were denied a fourth after a brilliant save from James Marrable to somehow deny Billy Johnson's superb volley.

Full Time- Great Wakering Rovers 3-2 Aveley FC.
