Millers on top after nine goal thriller

Millers on top after nine goal thriller

Jamie Manktelow

Sherwin Stanley bags a hat-trick at Coles Park, which saw Aveley get all three points.

In what was an incredible game of football, we managed to get five goals and all three points. Along with the win it was a superb following backing the Millers cheering us on at Haringey too.

We had the first chance of the game as Daniel McCullock left Anton Blackwood for dead but he fired his shot wide of the upright.

The hosts came right back and had a chance of their own, as Haringey top scorer Chris Benjamin went through on goal, but Millers keeper Lamar Johnson pulled out a smart save to keep the scores level.

It was us who took the lead. The ball didn’t look like it went out of play but the corner was awarded. A quality delivery from Arian Retkoceri came to Sherwin Stanley who powered in his header from eight yards out. Haringey Borough 0-1 Aveley.

30 seconds after Sherwin opened the scoring we had a massive chance to double our lead but Daniel McCullock’s shot was cleared off of the line by Aaron Scott.

We lived to rue that goal line clearance as minutes later Haringey equalised after some not so great defending. A cross came in from the right hand side as Daniel Aristidou found 37-year-old Dean Fenton at the back post and he tapped in from close range. Haringey Borough 1-1 Aveley.

It only took five minutes for another goal as the Millers went back in front. Daniel McCullock again did well and he almost scored but his shot was well saved by Austin Byfield, it landed to Abs Seymour who finished well past two players on the line. Haringey Borough 1-2 Aveley.

You’re most vulnerable when you’ve scored and only a 74 seconds later Haringey Borough hit straight back. The ball rebounded to Ross Dedman who tapped in from close range, Millers believed his was offside but nothing was given, and Haringey drew level. Haringey 2-2 Aveley.

Josh Willer tested Lamar Johnson from long range, but the Millers keeper did well to palm it over the bar.

Only four minutes after that save we went in front for the third time in the match. A cross into the back post was nodded down by Andreas Tobon, it landed to Arian Retkoceri who passed it into Sherwin Stanley who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Haringey 2-3 Aveley.

That third for the Millers came five minutes before half time and we really just needed to hold onto that lead and we just about did that. Haringey Borough came back strongly and Lamar Johnson was equal to a Djassi-Sambu headed effort from six yards out to keep us in front.

Half Time | Haringey 2-3 Aveley [Denton 27, Dedman 34 - Stanley 14,41, Seymour 32]

The Millers came out well and added to our lead. An Abs Seymour free-kick was superbly met by Sherwin Stanley as he arrived just before the keeper and flicked the ball past him for his hat-trick, and fifth goal in two matches, making him top goalscorer in the Ryman North. Haringey Borough 2-4 Aveley.

Much like all associated with Aveley, we just wanted to keep it tight and see out the game, but knowing Aveley this season, we give the maximum amount of entertainment and it continued here, albeit not one for the faint hearted.

Ex-Miller Dean Fenton, who last featured for Aveley some 12 years ago popped up to score a cracking goal. He found too much space down the left hand side and he powered his way into the penalty area, and fired in a shot at the near post which rifled into the back of the net to get the hosts back into the game with a lot of time left. Haringey Borough 3-4 Aveley.

Haringey continued to put pressure onto the Millers goal and eventually it paid off. Substitute Ralston Gabriel came on and within two minutes he scored another wonderful goal to level things up. The corner dropped to him on the edge of the area and he buried it with a sumptuous volley into the top corner. Haringey 4-4 Aveley.

The game took another twist as the Millers went back in front, Daniel McCullock crossed into Sherwin Stanley who just couldn’t convert the ball into the net, but he managed to keep it on. It came to Michael Pindy who pulled it back for Arian Retkoceri whose left footed finish found the bottom corner. Haringey 4-5 Aveley.

In all truths this game could’ve ended up double figures for both sides. Asamoah’s free-kick scraped the crossbar for the hosts as they tried to find another equaliser. But Millers Captain Abs Seymour was a whisker away from putting the game out of sight with two free-kick of his own, the first just went wide of the right hand post and the second was saved well from Austin Byfield.

Daniel McCullock and Sherwin Stanley were then denied both in quick succession. McCullock forced a brilliant save from Austin, and a minute later, Sherwin Stanley fired a shot fizzing past the left hand post.

But with six minutes plus added on time to go, Haringey Borough started to throw the kitchen sink at us. Frankie Sinclair cleared off of the line after a header from Chris Benjamin. Billy Coyne and Michael Finneran both threw their bodies in front of a shot destined for the back of the net. There was shouts for handball but would’ve been harsh from such close range.

There was even more drama at Coles Park after Haringey manager was sent off for abusive language towards the referee after perhaps a not so great decision which saw Rakim Richards booked for a high foot into Arian Retkoceri.

Deep into added on time Lamar Johnson pulled out a wonder save after two Millers’ left it for one another which saw Benjamin through on goal but Lamar pulled out a class save to keep all three points.

We almost added to our lead even later into added on time, Daniel McCullock shot was blocked, it fell to Sherwin Stanley whose effort went wide of the goal.

But the Millers managed to hold on in one of the most extraordinary games, a game of great attack and maybe some questionable defending at times. But three points is three points for Justin Gardner’s team.
