Millers beat the big freeze

Millers beat the big freeze

Jamie Manktelow

Millers up to third in the Ryman North after goals from; Michael Toner, Jeremiah Maja and Adalberto Pinto!

The game was definitely in doubt because of how the pitch looked frozen, but under foot it was soft and alright to play on in most parts.

Great Wakering started the game well in the first few minutes, but the shots towards our goal were all comfortable for captain Lamar Johnson in goal for the Millers. Scott Pethers, Jake Gordon and Butterworth all tried their luck but one was off target and the other two Lamar made the saves look simple.

Billy Coyne tried his luck a couple of times in the opening 15 minutes of the match. The first was in the opening minute where his right footed strike went wide of the right hand post. His second was a free-kick that was certainly travelling, but it was blocked well by the Great Wakering wall.

We didn't have to wait long for the opener as Michael Toner drove his left footed effort into the bottom left hand corner. Jack Edwards crossed the ball into the box, the Rovers keepers punch only reached Michael Toner who found the corner to put us in front at Burroughs Park. Great Wakering Rovers 0-1 Aveley.

The team seemed to grow in confidence and played some great football in difficult conditions. Seven Millers combined in passing exchanges to almost carve open Rovers but the cross was scrambled away by Easterford.

Adalberto Pinto tried his luck from an acute angle, and the hosts goalkeeper just about kept it out on the line to deny us our second of the game.

Another passage of brilliant football found Michael Toner on the edge of the area but his shot was inches wide of the goalkeepers left hand post.

We didn't have to wait long for our second and it was Jeremiah Maja who scored it. A great lofted cross from Michael Toner into the box found Jeremiah Maja at the back pos whose first headed effort was kept out superbly by Great Wakering's keeper, but Jeremiah was not to be denied as he hooked into the net while being on the ground to double our lead. Great Wakering Rovers 0-2 Aveley.

Lamar Johnson was forced into action at the end of the first half as he tipped Butterworth's strike over the bar to keep the hosts out.

Half Time | Great Wakering Rovers 0-2 Aveley.

The Millers started with a couple of good chances in the second half. Billy Coyne saw his rasping effort fly just over the crossbar from the edge of the area. And Jack Edwards also saw his shot just got wide of the left hand post.

The hosts didn't threaten that much but the momentum swung in their favour. Butterworth sneaked in behind our defence put it under Lamar towards our goal and Jake Gordon tapped in from close range to give Rovers a chance. Great Wakering Rovers 1-2 Aveley.

A minute after that goal Jake Gordon broke through our defence and Tommy Spillane dived in to win the ball just missed it and the penalty was given, three against the Millers in the last three games now. Due to the double jeopardy rule Tommy Spillane was only given a yellow card. Jake Gordon stepped up and buried the spot kick to tie the game up. Great Wakering Rovers 2-2 Aveley.

It takes a really good team with a great team spirit to keep fighting and come back from this to get a positive result and that's exactly what we did.

Only four minutes after Rovers equaliser we went back in front from an absolute cracker of a goal from Michael Toner. The ball landed to him and he connected with it perfectly and his volley found the top corner of the net. Great Wakering Rovers 2-3 Aveley.

Lamar Johnson was forced into action soon after that goal as Wakering searched for another leveller. Jake Gordon tried a long ranger but Lams was right behind the effort and minutes later he tipped over a Butterworth close ranged header.

The three points were soon wrapped up however after good work from Jeremiah Maja played it back to Tony Jacobs who hung a ball in the box for Adalberto Pinto who connected with the cross and powered a header into the goal, for our fourth and the three points! Great Wakering Rovers 2-4 Aveley.

There was one last chance for the Millers and Michael Toner who had three bites at the cherry to complete his hat trick. Good work again from Jeremiah Maja squared it to Michael Toner on the edge of the area whose first shot was blocked, his second shot hit the inside of the post and his third shot went inches over the bar from inside the box, so unlucky not to get his first hat trick.

But that is how it finished, after back to back wins on the road the Millers are now up to third with 39 points!
