Millers lose at Bowers

Millers lose at Bowers

Aveley Football Club

Two goals at the end of each half is enough for the hosts to claim all three points.

In what was tough conditions the Millers were looking to build on back to back draws to start off James Webster's reign as Aveley boss. This game was always going to be a tough one, it was our second away game of six that we face on the trot.

Last season Millers goalkeeper Rhys Madden was playing for the hosts and he was forced into the first save of the match, but he was equal to Anthony Stokes’ low free-kick and gathered well before anyone could follow up the re-bound.

On the fifteen minute mark the hosts had a glorious chance to go ahead. David Knight's corner was met by Lewis Clark who was unmarked but he headed well wide of the right hand post.

Five minutes before the break, David Knight saw his corner smack the post direct from the corner. The Millers’ half-clearance came back out to Knight, who forced Rhys Madden to get down to stop Knight's effort.

The hosts were not to be denied the lead for long as Tony Stokes nodded in after James Thomas shot was blocked, it then looped perfectly for Stokes to head Bowers in front.

Half Time | Bowers & Pitsea 1-0 Aveley.

The Millers were much improved in the second half and almost got back in the game soon after the restart. George Doyle in his second game for the Millers saw his free-kick which caught the wind almost catch out Callum Chafer, only for the keeper to tip the free-kick over the bar.

Just moments after that, Callum Chafer was at it again and stopped Aveley finding an equaliser by brilliantly tipping a Jordan Peart header onto the crossbar.

The Millers continued to search for a way back into the game and top scorer Jordan Watson could not make the most of his chance as his shot was deflected wide of the target.

Despite good pressure in the second half, the Millers just lacks that finishing touch and the game was put to bed on the 90 as Ben Sartain was first denied a couple of times by Rhys Madden, the ball came back to Johnny Ashman who controlled the ball and crossed for David Knight to head in from a yard out.
