Millers Pay The Penalty

Millers Pay The Penalty

Aveley Football Club

A Point gained, but also two points dropped as Millers missed a second-half penalty for high-flying Potters Bar Town to equalise soon after.

In what was another fine Aveley performance against tough opposition, the Millers were superb in the first half but seemed nervous for large parts of the second half.

The visitors buoyed by great form going into this game started off well, the pacey Fernandes down the left-hand side, he crossed to Eoin Casey but the ball was an inch away from Casey's path, and went away from danger.

Max Bradford had our first effort on goal but it was blocked and cleared away from danger, we then came forward again with George Doyle, looking really sharp but his cross was out for a goal kick.

Despite a good start, the Millers found themselves 1-0 down after eight minutes. Rhys Madden called for the ball, Chris Bourne half went for the ball and half left it, meaning that he got enough connection to take it away from Madden, into the path of Fernandes who then had the easy chance of tapping home from six yards away. Aveley 0-1 Potters Bar Town.

The Millers, however, were not downhearted, Alex Teniola was bundled into meaning we were awarded a free-kick 30 plus yards out. Midfielder George Doyle stepped up and found the top corner, in what could be our goal of the season. Aveley 1-1 Potters Bar Town.

Straight after we scored the visitors attacked in numbers to try and catch us off guard, effort from Fernandes as the ball dropped to him 10 yards out was tipped over the bar from Rhys Madden. And from that corner, Rhys was called into action again, this time denying a weighty effort from Michael Murray to keep the Millers level.

Thanks to those saves minutes later the Millers were ahead, Alex Teniola went to compete for the ball in the air, it came off his back, landed at the feet of Lewis Gard, on loan from Southend United, he had a lot to do, weaved past two players to get himself through on goal, and smashed it past the keeper to put Aveley in front for the first time in the match. Aveley 2-1 Potters Bar Town.

We might have thought our luck had changed when Murray had an effort that looked destined for the goal, hit the left-hand post and perfectly land back into Rhys Madden's arms right before halftime.

Half Time | Aveley 2-1 Potters Bar Town.

The difference between the first half and second half for the Millers was chalk and cheese as Potters Bar dominated large parts. Two chances fell to the visitors to level within the first minute of the restart was a cause for concern. Both chances from Fernandes and O'Leary found themselves a whisker wide of the Millers goal.

Against the run of play, the Millers were gifted a chance to have a two-goal buffer. Freddie Gard dribbled around the keeper but was taken down by the keeper and the referee awarded a penalty. Freddie picked himself up to take the spot-kick, but much like the AFC Sudbury game we missed it and that would cost us dear.

Potters Bar had a period for 15 minutes where the goal just looked inevitable, Lee O'Leary saw his long ranger smack the underside of the bar and somehow bounce the wrong side of the line and bounced away. Rhys Madden was then forced into two good saves low down to his left.

On the 72nd minute the equaliser finally arrived for the visitors, Rhys Madden parried the shot away, but centre-half Sean Grace was on hand and unmarked to bundle over the line for the leveller. Aveley 2-2 Potters Bar Town.

The game also had its controversial moments as Billy Adcock could consider himself lucky not to be sent off after clear headbutt on Millers' George Doyle, however, the substitute was awarded nothing. But in the 89th minute the Millers were denied what looked a clear penalty, Russell Malton fouled in build-up drifted past three players into the area, had his legs swept from under him, went to ground, and somehow he was adjudged to have dived and was awarded a yellow card.
