A brace from Myles Kaizer-Burrows on debut helped the Millers pick up a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Hertford Town at Parkside on Friday.
The hosts got off to the worst possible start when the found themselves a goal behind with just three minutes on the clock when Charlie Ruff’s 20-yard strike beat Rhys Madden.
Undeterred by that James Webster’s side remained on the front foot throughout and caused several problems from corners in the opening period, but try as they may, they found the equaliser elusive.
Doyle continued to be a threat and saw a fierce effort from 25 yards tipped over the bar past Hertford goalkeeper Charlie Mann, and on a counter attack Southend loanee Sewa Marah spurned the best Millers opportunity of the half.
A quick breakaway saw the ball find its way to Alex Teniola and he made to keep hold of the ball before putting the ball across for Marah but he fluffed his lines and the chance had been passed up.
Perseverance is key though and the equaliser eventually came the Millers way via another dangerous corner into the box from Doyle, and Kaizer-Burrows was in the right place to fire home and level matters.
Teniola could have given the hosts a lead going into the break but was just unable to connect to a teasing delivery into the box from the right as the Millers ended the half on top.
Half Time: Aveley 1-1 Hertford Town
No changes were made at the break by either side, but much like the first half, the visitors could have gone back in front only for former Miller Michael Toner to spurn a golden opportunity as he headed over when unmarked in the box.
But it was the Doyle-Kaizer-Brown combination which proved effective once again on 58 minutes when Doyle lofted a deep free-kick into the box and Kaizer-Brown shot first time into the bottom corner to give the hosts a welcome lead.
A one-goal lead is always precarious and try as they may to extend it, the opportunities were spurned.
Another quick breakaway presented Marah with a chance as he held off several challenges before being unable to find a clean connection and firing wide of the target, while Teniola saw another shot blocked.
Hertford were still in with a sniff of a late equaliser to deny Millers victory and as time drifted on the visitors were denied a late equaliser when Madden got down well to deny Michael Toner’s goalbound header.
Webster’s charges were able to seal the victory deep into stoppage time though as the Millers sealed a much-needed three points.
It was that man Doyle who proved influential again as the ball ricocheted into his path in the box before he fired low and hard into the bottom corner to seal the victory.
