The first Thursday night football we have this season, and it ended it the best way, in recent away games we equalised in the 98th minute away at Dereham Town to snatch a point, and in this game, we left it to the 94th minute to win this one.
We started on the front foot and could’ve easily been two up in three minutes. A cross almost drifted into the goal but it was denied by a fingertip save from the Brentwood keeper, a moment later Chris Bourne’s effort was just wide of the goal, and Tom Richardson was next to have a go but his goal-bound effort was blocked by Danny Dafter.
The game wasn’t without its controversy the first was Alex Teniola running into a ball through on goal, he was taken down to the floor by Dafter, but no-doing as it was waved away by the referee.
On the 27th minute, totally against the run of play, the Millers found themselves behind, an excellent cross from the left hand side found former-Miller Harry Gibbs at the back post who powered in his header in off the crossbar. Brentwood 1-0 Aveley.
After that goal the hosts were buoyed by it and could’ve been further ahead. A corner came in and landed at Danny Dafter’s feet, but he poked it wide of our right hand post.
Moments later and striker Tony Stokes’ effort cracked the crossbar, the ball bounced up and Stokes fired towards goal but he was denied by the bar.
It only took seven minutes and the Millers were level, a nice ball through from Freddie Gard came to Tom Richardson, his first touch set him up for a strike at goal and Richardson didn’t need an invitation as he blasted past the keeper. Brentwood 1-1 Aveley.
Half Time | Brentwood Town 1-1 Aveley.
Like the first half, the Millers started the second half on the front foot. Alex Teniola received the ball, created his own space and took aim for the goal but was denied by a tip round the post by Tim Brown.
From the resulting corner somehow we didn't take the lead, the ball landed to Ryan Cosson and Alex Stephenson, it was pulled back for Ryan Cosson who scuffed it wide of the right-hand post.
Next incident in the game came on the 60th minute where ex-Miller Danny Dafter went in off the ground and studs up on Tom Richardson's ankle, thankfully Tom wasn't injured, after a bit of handbags Dafter was let off and given a yellow card.
We kept plugging away and we came within inches of going in front, two dangerous balls in from Freddie Gard were so close to Alex Stephenson getting a touch on them to take them in as Brentwood survived.
The hosts did have their chances on the counter-attack and missed great opportunities with Rhys Madden making a couple of good saves from close range.
As the time ticked to 90 we had a glorious chance for a long-throw into the box, Southend loanee flicked the ball on, the ball wouldn't come down for Ryan Cosson to smash it home, and because of that, he fired over the bar.
It looked like the game was going to end in a draw but with practically the last kick of the game, a corner came in from Freddie Gard, headed goalwards by Alex Stephenson, his header was saved, it landed to Max Bradford who poked it into the bottom corner to snatch all three points at the death. Brentwood 1-2 Aveley.
