After playing two days prior on Thursday away at Brentwood, tiredness never really looked to be a factor on the day. We made three changes which saw Alex Teniola, Chris Bourne and Garrett Kelly were given breaks as they were on the bench. They made way for George Doyle coming back from a four-game ban, Dan Walker, on loan from Southend United making his first start for the club and making his debut Calvin Ekipeta recently signed from Greenwich Borough.
The game was very much end to end early on with the first effort of the game falling to the Millers, Russell Malton crossed from the right, found Dan Walker but he was denied by Josh Pope who got down well to deny us from taking the lead.
Rhys Madden was then forced into a save from close range as he denied Joe Carden, minutes later debutante Calvin Ekpiteta tried his luck from the edge of the are4a after he cut inside but curled over the bar. The Millers tried playing football in the first half and it just wasn't going to happen on a very bobbly pitch.
A mix-up between Soham keeper Josh Pope and his defence gave Tom Richardson a half chance, but he couldn't squeeze in from the tight angle.
That chance came back to bite the Millers as the hosts then took the lead, a huge bounce on the pitch helped set up Sam Mulready who was able to head the ball over the on-rushing Rhys Madden into the empty net. Soham 1-0 Aveley.
Despite that setback, the Millers kept plugging away and had a glorious chance to equalise before halftime. Tom Richardson pin-point cross found Dan Walker on his first start for the club, and if he headed anywhere apart from where he did, he would've had his first goal for the club, but unfortunately, Josh Pope was in the right place to save it from going into the goal.
Half Time | Soham Town Rangers 1-0 Aveley.
We didn't seem to create much in the second half for the first 15-20 minutes as Soham created a couple of chances to all but end the game. Joe Carden fired over the bar from 12 yards out when he should've hit the target after good work down the left hand side (our right).
Millers Boss James Webster made the changes with Alex Teniola and Tony Martin coming on to change the style of our play and it worked. From a free-kick the ball came back out to George Doyle who ran it to the byline, he floated it back into the box, it was met by a mix of Alex Stephenson and Tom Richardson who bundled it across the line, Richardson claimed it the most, so we gave it to him.. Soham 1-1 Aveley.
After that goal the game became open again, Soham's chances were being created by long balls and pace down their left hand side which led to them hitting the crossbar.
Sam Mulready had another chance for Soham but he dragged his effort wide of our right-hand post.
We did have a couple of late changes but Tom Richardson couldn't convert after Freddie Gard found him on the edge of the area. But after two games in three days and four points from it, it was a successful return in the Bostik North.
