Despite the disappointing performance, the Championship will go down to the final weekend with a mouthwatering tie at East Thurrock.
The Millers’ dominated the possession stakes, but were unable to break down a stubborn and dogged Maldon defence.
Maldon started the brighter of the two sides and managed to break the deadlock after 14 minutes when a ball in from the left was missed by the Millers’ defence and Niki Love poked into the net.
Having beaten the Millers’ earlier on in the season, it looked likely that Maldon would be the only side to do the double over them, but Aveley started to gain a foothold in the match.
And after 32 minutes the Millers’ had found the equaliser.
Junior Dadson’s ball in from the left was only half cleared by the Maldon defence and Richard Ketchell was on hand to drill low into the net past keeper Jack Buckfield.
After the break, the Millers’ continued to be in the ascendancy but were unable to find the elusive touch.
They were also made to pay when a mistake from the goalscorer Ketchell allowed Love the time on the ball to chip James Marrable, but the delicate shot agonisingly went the wrong side of the bar.
Buckfield continued to block any Millers’ chances, and he had to be quick to react to both Junior Dadson and Bryan Hammatt in a matter of minutes.
But it was Maldon that could have nicked all three points as Aveley’s defence backed off Nav Arain allowing the midfielder space to get a shot on goal but Marrable was equal to the effort.
