Two soft goals sees Aveley slip to disappointing defeat

Two soft goals sees Aveley slip to disappointing defeat

Colin Munford

Police edge uneventful encounter

Two sloppy defensive errors cost the Millers dear as their FA Cup hangover continued.
Again, as like Saturday, there was little to separate the two sides, but two errors of judgement at the back in the first period saw Aveley pay the ultimate price.
Aveley were without regular number one Dave McCartney after he injured his knee in the FA Cup defeat at Hanworth Villa on Saturday, and Dave Hogan, Dagenham & Redbridge’s number two goalkeeper was drafted in for the match.
From a disputed throw-in after 14 minutes, Met Police played the ball back to left back Duran Reynolds, also on loan from League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge, and his ball into the box found the head of Police’s unmarked striker Stafforde Palmer.
His header didn’t appear to be that strong but it crept into the corner of the net.
In a first half of little action it was another defensive lapse which saw the Millers fall even further behind.
Elliott Taylor’s deep ball in from the right was missed in the Aveley box by recent signing Paul Shave and keeper Hogan, allowing Chris O’Flaherty the simple task of nodding in from close range.
Met Police picked up several booking during the match, and one was collected by substitute keeper Mo Maan, after an altercation with the home dugout.
After the break, the best chances for the hosts fell to striker Gary Wharton as he first saw his 50th minute shot blocked by Police keeper Jamie Butler and then missed the best opportunity of the half as the ball came loose in the area and Wharton was the quickest to react but with many expecting it to find it nestling into the net, but it was way off target and no worry for Butler.
And that was as good as it got for the Millers as they were left to complete one of the worst weeks in recent times.
After last Tuesday’s performance against Canvey Island, the difference a week make certainly showed.

Aveley: Dave Hogan, Ryan Andrews, Donovan Wilson, Harry Milton,Spencer Harrison, Paul Shave, Reece Morgan (Joey May 85), Micah Hyde, Gary Wharton (Daniel Francis 88), Sherwin Stanley (Joe Nwoko 69), Sean Bonnett-Johnson
