For the second successive match Aveley slipped to a 2-1 defeat against a top three side as goals from Martin Tuohy and Reiss Noel in either half was enough for the Urchins to just edge past the Millers.
On Tuesday night it was Billericay and now it was Jimmy McFarlane’s Urchins that just got the better of Lee Hodges’ side.
The Urchins goal lived a charmed life early on when a shot was tipped over the bar from keeper Joe Woolley, though former Miller Martin Tuohy skimmed an effort against the post.
Dave McCartney done well to keep out Andy Tomlinson’s free kick, while Jonathan Hunt saw his effort scrambled off the line.
And unsurprisingly it was Tuohy who broke the deadlock, when substitute Tommy Black, on for the injured Hunt, beat the offside trap down the right wing and delivered a ball into the box for the prolific striker to head into the ground and in off the underside of the crossbar for his 13th league goal of the campaign.
And McCartney was called to the rescue again for the Millers when he tipped over Black’s shot later in the half.
Hodges changed formation at the half-time interval with the introduction of Ellis Remy up front alongside David Knight, while Ryan Andrews replaced Danny Smith at right back.
But the Millers fell a further goal behind when Frankie Curley’s ball in from the right was headed clear by Paul Shave but it fell straight to Reiss Noel and the central half produced a finish more accustomed to a centre forward in dispatching it past McCartney.
Hodges, replaced Evans Kouassi with new signing, Jake Cass who had been on trial with League Two side Burton Albion earlier in the week, and what an inspired introduction that proved.
McCartney’s goal kick was flicked on by Ellis Remy and Reiss Noel failed to clear his lines for the hosts and allowed Cass to nip in.
The winger managed to block Noel’s clearance to allow him a clear path on goal and though Joe Anderson got back to try and thwart Cass, he was able to round keeper Joe Woolley and fire low into the net and give the visitors a lifeline.
Woolley was forced into a fine save to deny the Millers an equaliser as he tipped over a long range effort from the left wing,
But it wasn’t to be for the visitors and despite a valiant effort once more they were unable to come away with something to show for it.
