Millers undone at Hastings

Millers undone at Hastings

Colin Munford

Hastings United 2, Aveley 1

A goal just after half time from Kenny Pogue ensured all three points went the way of the hosts in a hotly contested encounter.
Lee Carey’s 28th minute opener for Hastings was cancelled out by Paul Shave’s equaliser, though Pogue converted one of many chances in the second half for Sean Ray’s side, with new goalkeeper Adam Rafis making a number of saves to keep the Millers in the match.
Hastings started on top when Carey’s ball in was headed wide by player-manager Ray, but there was little goalmouth action in a crucial tie for both teams.
And the home side duly went in front when Carey’s well struck free-kick from just outside the box.
Rafis was called into action to deny Josh Jirbandey minutes later, but the Millers got a bizarre leveller after 33 minutes.
Paul Shave from midway inside his own half attempted to cross the ball into the box, but home goalkeeper Matt Armstrong-Ford misjudged the effort and it went all the way into the net.
David Knight had just hit the post with his curling free-kick, and the goal, though it was fortunate, it was maybe that bit of luck Lee Hodges’ side had needed.
But only three minutes into the half the hosts went in front again after a good move resulted in Jack Dixon’s cross being fired home by Pogue from close range, and it was a lead the hosts could have added to on numerous occasions.
Jordan Woodley fired just over the bar, while at the other Sean Bonnett-Johnson fired a shot wide of the goal when picked out in the box by half time substitute Abs Thompson.
Home substitute Ben Davisson shot hit the post with 14 minutes left on the clock and Shave missed another decent opportunity from Knight’s ball in.
Jamie Crellin hit the bar, while in the dying minutes Lynvall Duncan fired a shot straight at Armstrong-Ford.
Abs Thompson and Woodley were both sent off late on after a tangle near the touchline escalated into a mass brawl, though referee Chris Phillips initially sent off the hosts Ross Sutton in a case of mistaken identity.
Aveley: Adam Rafis, Ryan Andrews, Sam Holloway, Lynvall Duncan, Spencer Harrison, Paul Shave, Sean Bonnett-Johnson, Reece Morgan ( Joey May 8), Ricki Burbridge (Abs Thompson 46), David Knight, Evans Kouassi ( Joe Keith 67).
Unused substitutes: Jake Cass, Danny Smith.
