Francis levels it late on for Millers

Trevor Quantock

Aveley 1 Cray Wanderers 1

Daniel Francis’ late effort helped Aveley secure a share of the spoils against play-off chasing Cray Wanderers.
And it was Ian Jenkins’ visitors who enjoyed the better start when Jack Clark’s effort was blocked by home keeper Lamar Johnson after confusion at the back between Johnson and Millers skipper Spencer Harrison.
Aveley striker Anton Stephenson almost reached Francis’ inswinging cross later in the half before Lewis Perkins shot just wide after a left wing delivery.
But Cray introduced Leigh Bremner at the break and that proved to be an astute move as he headed the visitors into the lead three minutes into the second half at the near post.
And the visitors then almost doubled their lead when Lewis Perkins fired a shot wide at the near post from Clark’s corner, but it was another inspired sub, this time from the hosts that saw them level.
Paul Burnett had already put one dangerous corner into the box, before firing in another from the opposite side with six minutes remaining and Francis was at the back post ready to fire home his seventh of the season.
In stoppage time the Millers had a chance to snatch all three points when Abs Thompson’s cut back from the by-line wasn’t cleared by Cray and Francis pounced, only to be denied by a smart save from Cray keeper Andy Walker.
Aveley: Lamar Johnson, Spencer Harrison (Jason Fox 76), Sam Holloway, Steven Clark, AJ Olatunbosun, Alfred Kamara, Michael Begg, Sheldon Sellears (Paul Burnett 82), Anton Stephenson (Abs Thompson 48), Daniel Francis, Dee Okojie.
Unused subtitutes: Karl Blake, Sean Bonnett-Johnson.
