Millers end Jammers hoodoo
By Aveley Football Club
An Alex Akrofi penalty midway through the first half was enough for the Millers to go to second in the table.
Before the match we knew what sort of game to expect, having lost six on the bounce away at Maldon & Tiptree, and haven't ever won in the league ever. Throughout this season the Jammers were yet to not score a goal in a game, and after a brilliant and solid performance we denied them from scoring in this game.
The hosts started thee game strongly, having a good home record before today's match, and George Sykes, who joined from Canvey Island a few weeks ago, got in behind our defensive line and blazed his effort over the crossbar. Billy Roast then had a header after he was found Sammie Mcleod but he headed over the bar.
The Millers grew into the game and possibly against the run of play we took the lead. Tom Richardson did well down the left hand side, he came inside, beat his man Jack Cawley, and had his legs swept away. Alex Akrofi stepped up for his sixth goal in six games. Maldon & Tiptree 0-1 Aveley.
After that goal we finished the first half in total control. Tom Richardson had a chance from a corner after he was found by George Doyle, but the ball skimmed off the top of his head and out for a goal kick.
Alex Akroi then saw fantastic turn and effort fizz past the keepers left hand post. Andy Freeman put in a real dangerous free-kick into the box, but on the surface the keeper did very well to hold onto the ball, all it needed was a touch and on this occasion we couldn't get a touch.
David Hughes was forced into action and was on form throughout the game. He got down brilliantly to deny a goal bound George Sykes header, it looked in, but the fainted of fingertips denied Sykes from getting his second for the club.
To end the half we finished it well on top, George Doyle had an effort head towards goal, but his effort was blocked superbly from Billy Roast, and after back to back subsequent corners the ball was cleared and it remained 1-0.
Half Time | Maldon & Tiptree 0-1 Aveley.
The second half was a real open game as both teams looked for more goals despite the weather conditions which didn't help for a great passing game, but both teams played some good passages of football.
David Hughes was forced to make the first save of the second half on the 55th minute from a low drive by Christopher Millar.
We came back and had a couple of glorious chances. The first was Alex Akrofi he was through on goal, was taken out by Jack Cawley on the edge of the area, it looked quite clear cut to be a foul, but on this occasion nothing was given. The second, and best chance of the game came after great work from Tom Richardson, he squared the ball across to Sam Mvemba, the ball seemed to take a little bounce just before getting to Sam, and he couldn't convert as the ball went over the crossbar.
Freddie Gard came on after recovering from his recent injury and looked dangerous as he had an effort go inches wide of the left hand post. Tom Richardson also had a great chance as he went in on goal and saw his effort saved well by Ben Mcnammara to keep the Jammers in the game.
Ben Mcnammara next punched a goal bound chance of the line, from a free-kick Tom Richardson hooked towards the goal, it looked like it was going in, but somehow Mcnammara got around Alex Akrofi and cleared it away.
The Millers had to weather the storm from the hosts, although David Hughes commanded his area expertly with fantastic handling with balls launched into the box, he didn't really need to make any key saves in the last 15 minutes, as the Millers defended well to see out the game, and claim a vital three points on the road.
