Following on from our superb second half away at Canvey Island a couple of days previous, the Millers hosted bottom of the league Romford, who certainly didn't play like that was their position in the league table with their compact defence and counter attacking threat, but two fist half goals and a professional job in the second half helped the Millers to all three points.
We started the game really well and could've gone ahead quickly, Andy Freeman had a free-kick on the edge of the area and almost managed to slip in Alex Akrofi but great covering from Danny Cossington done enough to clear the ball away for a corner, from the corner the ball just went over the head of Sam Cross and cleared away from danger.
Marcus Milner was played in by Harry Gibbs, Marcus found Alex Akrofi in the area who had a defender in front of him, Alex tried playing it back to Marcus Milner but Romford's keeper James Scammell was on hand to intercept before Marcus could apply the finish.
Jake Pitty was next to play a ball through the space in behind Romford, he found a nice ball down the line to Tom Richardson, Richardson fizzed the ball into the box but it was just an inch away from Alex Akrofi getting the toe on it to take it into the goal.
More good work from the Millers created another chance, Marcus Milner found space down the flank, played it into Tom Richardson who was on the edge of the area, he curled his effort towards goal but was denied by James Scammell.
Despite being bottom of the table, the visitors did always pose that threat when they countered in numbers, they just couldn't apply the finishes, and probably why they find themselves at the bottom of the table at the moment. Olukuga had a long ranged attempt which sailed over the bar and minutes later Malaki Toussaint tested David Hughes with an effort which swirled everywhere and Hughesy did well to get his body behind the ball and make the save.
The Millers right back, Jake Pitty, made another good run forward and had a left footed attempt before being taken down on the edge of the area, Sam Cross stepped up but curled his 22-yard free-kick over the crossbar.
Alex Akrofi was next to have a go at goal, with his back to goal and a defender in between him and the goal, he turned made himself some space, fired at goal but James Scammell was well placed to make the save.
On the 35th minute we made the breakthrough. Tom Richardson led the line well played the ball into Shad Ngandu who got past the last defender and found the corner of the net to put the Millers ahead. Aveley 1-0 Romford.
Two minutes later and we almost had our second and some breathing space, Alex Akrofi crossed into the box, Tom Richardson got up well but saw his headed effort cleared off the line by Romford left-back Toby Barlow.
In the 44th minute, we doubled our lead, Tom Richardson found himself some space, was denied well by Scammell again, who palmed it away, but only as far as Alex Akrofi who tapped in from close range to put some breathing space between us and Boro. Aveley 2-0 Romford.
The game could've turned with the last chance of the half coming for the visitors. Romford won the ball in midfield, had a break of three on three as Khadean Campbell took aim from the edge of the area only to be denied by the base of the post, it came to Michael Mignot, but his shot was blocked by Harry Gibbs and cleared by Sam Cross.
Half Time | Aveley 2-0 Romford.
We started off the second half on top and looked like we were going to get our third of the game. Alex Akrofi and Tom Richardson combined well on the edge of the area which saw Akrofi go through on goal, it looked to be a certain goal but Alex was denied well by James Scammell who came out and spread himself to deny the forward from 12 yards.
In the next three minutes we then had two more close calls for us going ahead. First was a cross from Jake Pitty which was about two inches away from finding the top, but it flashed just wide of the keepers' right hand post. The second was after a nice pass from Shad Ngandu which found Alex Akrofi, who curled towards goal but found the keeper their to make the save again.
We kept going to really kill the game off, but Marcus Milner saw his hooked goal-bound effort cleared off the line, moments later Alex Akrofi had a goal disallowed, much-like Aveley's second goal, Tom Richardson had a shot at goal which was saved, swept home by Alex Akrofi, but this time the linesmen flagged for offside.
James Scammell next finger-tipped an effort from Andy Freeman which looked destined for the bottom corner, but the Romford shot stopper got down well and tipped it away for a corner. From that resulting corner Tom Richardson tried an acrobatic effort which went just wide of the left hand post.
Wyan Reid came on and made an immediate impact as he looked like he scored but his rasping effort crashed the side netting as we continued to hunt for the third of the game.
Around the 68th minute the visitors began to put more bodies forward in search of a route back into the game. They had a shout for a penalty as Jake Pitty took down Michael Mignot on the edge of the area. Gabriel Kellum stepped up and fired the dangerously-placed free-kick well over the crossbar. Kellum was then denied a minute later as he got in-behind, rounded David Hughes, fired towards goal but was denied by a fantastic headed goal-line clearance from centre half Harry Gibbs.
Tom Richardson was unlucky not to get a goal that his performance leading the line deserved. A corner came in from Alex Akrofi, Richardson headed towards goal but the diving James Scammell somehow saved it onto the post, where the follow-up was smashed towards goal by Sam Cross but it was denied by blocks from the defender.
The last chance of the game came to James Love who had a speculative effort which was just over the crossbar. Reggie Hubbard came on with a few minutes left, his first appearance back from injury just after his debut goal away in our 3-1 win over Witham Town.
