Six second half goals ensured a comfortable victory for Justin Gardner’s side, with man of the match Wall notching up a hat-trick.

It wasn’t all plain sailing however for the Millers after going in at the break a goal behind following a wonder strike from Joe Marsden.

A rollicking from Gardner was to be received and it duly worked as within 12 second half minutes the Millers were 3-1 up thanks to two from Wall either side of a debut goal from Sos Yao.

Wall’s hat-trick goal plus goals from Anton Stephenson and Shane Oakley from the spot ensured it was a happy Millers camp as they shot straight to the top of the embryonic league table.

After a promising pre-season campaign Justin Gardner and his players would have been itching to get the new season under way and they began like a house on fire with three early chances.

Shane Oakley latched onto a short back-pass before rounding the goalkeeper only to strike the post with his effort.

Sos Yao moments later also went around the goalkeeper but with the ball stuck under his feet he couldn’t quite find the direction to steer into the empty net.

Yao once again found himself in a decent scoring position, but after fooling the Wroxham goalkeeper into going to ground early he couldn’t lift the ball enough with Scott Cruickshank making the save.

Three good chances wasted and when Cruickshank punched clear after a Brian Okwera cross was deflected towards his own goal by Danny Rust you were starting to wonder if it was going to be one of those days for Aveley.

Jack Giddens had remained mainly untested, other than a Sam Harty long ranger, but the Millers were made to rue their missed chances when Joe Marsden opened the scoring.

After Ross Wall lost the ball in the middle of the park, Harty had to ball chipped into his feet just inside the centre circle. With no one around him he carried the ball forward before unleashing a rocket past Giddens that nestled in the bottom corner to the give the visitors a surprising lead going into the break.

Gardner said after the match that he had never ripped into his players as much as he did at half time and whatever he said had the desired effect as before the hour mark that one goal deficit was turned into a two goal lead.

Wall had already had the ball in the back of the net a few moments earlier, only to see the linesman’s flag rule it out, but there no flag on this occasion as Wall put the Millers back on level terms after heading in a Teddy Nesbitt free kick from about six yards out.

Yao then gave the hosts the lead with Wall turning the provider. After the Millers man of the match sprayed the ball from right to left, Yao cut inside his man and curled his shot in off the post to give the Millers the lead.

A blistering start to the second half for the home side was then completed when Wall got his second of the game, but there was more than a hint of fortune as the Millers number seven shaped to cross towards the far post, his cross looped straight over the head of Cruickshank to make it 3-1.

Just after the hour mark and Wall completed his hat-trick, tapping in from close range after a low cross from Nesbitt to all but seal the three points.

The Millers though were far from done and substitute Anton Stephenson scored on his Millers debut. Oakley looked to be getting his name on the score-sheet but after pulling wide he pulled the ball back for Stephenson who struck a shot across his body, sending Cruickshank the wrong way, to make it five.

In the dying seconds of injury time and with little Wroxham resistance Aveley made it six from the penalty spot. A Wroxham corner was cleared to the feet of Aaron Gayle who ran almost the length of the pitch before being brought down in the area.

The video appears to show Fernando Vide win the ball cleanly but the referee thought otherwise pointing to the spot. Oakley stepped up to smash home and send Aveley top of the league on goals scored.

Despite the impressive start to the season, Aveley manager Gardner didn’t get too carried away in his reaction saying “I would have liked a clean sheet.”

He continued, saying “Went in at half time, I don’t think I’ve ever ripped into them so much – I was hurt. I said I give you five minutes or I’m making three subs and we scored two in five, something worked at half time.”

Hat-trick hero, Ross Wall, said “we made it hard for ourselves in the first half, if we scored them two chances early on I reckon we would have done them eight or nine. But that’s football, they go down the other end, score a goal, in the end the second half we done well.”

Speaking about his hat-trick, Wall said “Ted (Nesbitt) puts a great ball in for the free kick, just nodded it in. Ted’s stuck another ball in for the third one as well and that’s probably the first hat trick I’ve had in ages.”

When asked if he meant the second goal that looped in over the Wroxham goalkeeper’s head, Wall was honest enough to say “No. Definitely not. That was a cross, but it looked good on the old video.”
